Yeah the look that was introduced sometime in 1997 was dropped at the same time as the main ident with the turqoise watery background. Don't remember seeing the 1997 one that much though. It might have been dropped before that I'm not 100% sure. As mentioned by one of the other posters, that new HTV look was launched in March 1999 at the same time as the Evening/Nightly news programmes were introduced and the Wales news had a new look as well. Seems strange that HTV went for a new ident, only for it to be dropped in November the same year when the "Hearts" idents were introduced. It would have made sense to keep the one that was introduced in 1995 till that time.
That new HTV look on the 8th march 1999, did that also replace that orange look?

Same can be said of the 2001 Granada Reports and Calendar titles, which got replaced by the first regional new generics less than a year later. Yorkshire's 1999 idents and Tyne Tees's 2000 idents were also pointless (Tyne Tees didn't edit their generic, leading to mismatched branding, while Yorkshire had far too many versions just for local usage). All were probably designed at a time when they thought the generics weren't happening.

This is a cheap variation on the water ident. It started as a promo but was used as an ident during 1997.
As to when in 1997, I can vouch that this was definitely on air during the summer of that year.

The regional news generic titles didn't appear until 2004 when ITV plc was created. The celebrity ITV idents had replaced most regional ident branding in 2002 but regional news titles (including HTV News on ITV 1 Wales/West) remained for another year and a half.
