I remember watching Central one weekend in October 1998 and the Carlton-esque idents were on air by then, the Christmas clips you refer to from TV Ark are definitely from 1998 aswell. No one seems to be sure when they were introduced, possibly when Central moved to Gas Street, or when CiTV relaunched in 1998, but for someone who watched Granada in my youth has no idea when Central half morphed into Carlton.

It was definitely some time in Spring 1998. Some of us have discussed it at length on here. I can't remember, but someone ruled out the idents being changed on the same day CITV was revamped and that the cake had already gone by that point. There used to be more videos on youtube of Central around this era and I think we pinpointed the date down to some time in April. It was still in use in March but gone by the last week of April. So, the 20th is plausible, I just wonder whether or not it's an educated guess or whether whoever wrote that actually knows for sure.

By the way, an old style version of the ident where Central flies off the screen, apart from the 't' which morphs onto 'ITV' did exist and I think I've seen it somewhere on youtube continuity clips. Also, I personally believe that these idents were made back in 1996, along with Carlton's and that the intention was to introduce them on both channels on the same day, however, for Central, it was aborted, only for someone to do a u-turn some 18 or so months later.

This is very likely - given that the idents are literally exactly the same except for the ending it would seem an enormous waste of time to have re-edits made later for them only to be used for 6 months (as was planned - remember that the hearts idents weren't supposed to take until the end of 1999 to launch). It is likely that in 1996 Carlton's interest in Central was mainly around the production side of the business and the regional broadcasting operation still had enough local control to decide what it's presentation should look like and to block debranding efforts. There was also probably a wish to continue to make their own presentation rather than accept re-edits from London in order to keep someone in a job for another year.

By 1998 it is likely that the landscape had radically changed and Carlton wanted to start debranding. All ident clips from this era I've seen have the announcer referring to the station as 'Central ITV' in such a religious way that it could only have been mandated by Carlton Towers. This would tie in with the first signs of debranding at Westcountry - although they got to keep their own idents they moved to ITV branded trailers which didn't mention their own name at all from about the same time (which were weird, still clearly made in house and in their own style, but just with ITV rather than Westcountry branding).

That date is from me, who else, Central TV pages is still in an utter mess, most of the other ITV pages have/are being improved, Thames is Deffo on its way, it just needs copy edit , and we will be sorted. Date for it is listed on Page 16 of the complete ident list, for anyone interested. ( shall be getting updated shortly with the new Granada UTV and Yorkshire details)

Thanks to NOW DELETED video, we were able as Mr Kite says point point it down to April 1998,

* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guwz0_HaWkM 19th March 1998
* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBEsJYFSEv8 April 1998 - Had Central name like Carlton: I believe this to be Weekend of 25/26 late night. Im sure it also said something about the F1 race Clip had a promo for "Parking Wars" went out on Wednesday 29th April 1998. the following year it would on Fridays as a full series. And it did say Wednesday at 8pm. Easter fall on April 12th 1998 and if we are going by the bank holiday idea,

* Tuesday 14th
* Monday 20th Hence the reason for this Date:

* http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=SasRgP2qN_M 10th May 1998

It decent enough guess I say! The only way it will be disprove is if a video appear of Central between 6th - 11th April, which would stern it First Monday in April. BUT would LOVE TO HEAR IF YOU CAN DISPROVE ME!!!!!!

If only we could get as close to Yorkshire TV revised 1991 idea! Wink since this is the last itv ident needing to be resolved.

Well, regarding the change in YTV logo, YouTube footage confirms the change was after 26 December 1990 and before 25 September 1991. We're there any known mini YTV rebrands during this time (eg. Update of Calendar titles) that may give a clue?

My money is on two dates, first week in January or September. It would tie in with other rebrands there did. I probely be wrong.

I *think* it was later than March, because of a very small amount of YTV I saw in March 1991. But don't quote me on that - just a hunch.

There's this very odd Ulster one too, courtesy of thetvroom.com:

According to them:

Quote:
Above: Ulster Television ident [5]. In 1987, this short ident sequence was used to introduce the weekday evening regional news programme 'Six Tonight'. For a short period in autumn 1988, this sequence replaced the 'telly on a stick' ident.

I take it this is the "rare Ulster ident" that was spoken of all those years ago?

I believe that was part of Six Tonight's titles?

Yes. First seen on Monday 7th September 1987 leading into the first edition of "Six Tonight", the logo and Ulster Television legend faded into the background before a CGI map of the Six Counties flew in off-screen.

This was cut off the "Six Tonight" titles when the blue/yellow waveform/oscilloscope logo came into use in early 1989.

It's also correct that this CGI ident replaced the "lollipop"/"telly on a stick" by Autumn 1988 - it was around this time UTV began using in-house designed CGI presentation packages which changed on a seasonal basis, so perhaps there was someone in the graphics/promotion team at HH who realised having modern-looking visuals alongside the eight-year-old ident clashed. They kept the music, though.

Again, this ident was replaced by the blue/yellow logo in early 1989.

Just to double check with the ITV 1989 ident, was STV the only company to take if from the start, and just used it when ever it felt like?

* 1988, There were umpteen seasonal idents along with 85 one.
* Jan 1989 new Blue ident come along: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=lFDPnXShi4c#t=156s

* Only recording of STV use of ITV ident http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsvPPGDY6PQ Last epsoide of Home James went out on 30/10/1989

* There is a few clip from xmas 1989 and there is no sign of that ITV ident

Did Scottish TV use it all the time from 1st September - until December 1989 or did there use it when ever there felt like? IS both the 1989 ident and ITV ident. We already know Central did take it from the start but messed around with it etc..

I can't answer for sure but as an educated guess, I reckon they mixed and matched it with their existing presentation of the time.

Here's a clip of 30th December 1989 with the 1989 vintage thistle being used on a junction into ITN around 4 minutes in...

I doubt that ident ever went away. Also, there was invision continuity around that time too. TV Ark suggest that STV used the generic ident "rarely" which suggests it never got a lot of outings even during those three short months.
