I believe Granada did briefly use the generic ITV ident in 1989 in selected junctions. Not sure how much detail you're wanting to go into here though, as the same could be said for a few other regions that didn't officislly take that ident.

I forgot about that. I believe it was cut n shut version of the 1989 version about not sure when or why it killed off.

More details the better

Granada never used their regional version. If anything, the logo was inconsistent as the arrow didn't join up with the G. I recall seeing the regionalness ITV logo as a child, though this was very occassional and may well have been in promos rather than as an ident. They did use a version they edited themselves to some extent. Instead of just a yellow G-arrow on a black background, the opening was a variation of the scenic idents they were using c1989. A large semi-transparent G-arrow is shown over a shore, possibly the Mersey. The jingle Granada used around then and into the 90s, apparently formerly used by the IBA, is heared before the Dundas Music starts and the standard form up (Owl, Big Ben etc) is seen. The final form up is the standard ITV logo but with 'Granada' written underneath it. I think this was rarely used also. Even despite the mess up in regards to the logo, Granada didn't seem to have a great interest in ITV branding at the time.

I stand corrected, Mr Kite. Yes, it was the regionless ITV ident mixed with something else - sometimes used into NAT I think? I've seen footage somewhere so it does exist.

Is this it at the start of this clip? Looks like genuine footage but cuts off.

Yes, that's it. It looks like it's being used to lead into a promo for network programmes there, as it seems whoever uploaded it has curiously cut it off at the end and then straight into the London's Burning junction.

That said, TV Ark has a capture of it, albeit on very wobbly VHS, complete with a stock "ITV is brought to you by Granada" announcement, which could well be pre-recorded....

TV Ark claim it's from 1990, or at least their example is. It adds up and will only have been used in a short window between the introduction of the 1989 ITV logo and Granada's blue stripe identity in 1990. I'm pretty sure the blue stripe ident usurped any older idents and presenation.

Does anyone remember this HTV ident from 1997? It looks legit in every way but I have no memory of it.

Wasn't that part of their Christmas Promo?

It's not really that Christmassy :/

I've only just remembered all the programme genre idents they used at this time.

The music does have a 'holiday' feel to it though.

Edit: In fact, if you look at this clip from July 1997...

...you'll notice that on the Next slide, one of those start shapes is shown. Also, on the programme trailers, the HTV logo forms up as it does on that ident. Perhaps it was occassional purpose rather than a seasonal ident.

Edit Again: Here it is in use on 12th July 1997...

Wikipedia seems to think that the Central Cake was replaced by the quasi-Carltonised idents on Monday 20th April 1998. Is this true?

Well, technically, everyone can edit Wikipedia articles, so, unless any reliable source is provided, well… um…

I wouldn't say it's definitely not true, but I always thought the final new 'cake' idents were introduced in April 1998 and the Carlton-esque 'CENTRAL' ones weren't brought in until early 1999, at the same time Westcountry launched their final idents with the carlton.com URL on them (which were also made in widescreen and occasionally transmitted as such - since these predate the hearts idents by over 6 months, that makes Westcountry the first ITV station to have widescreen idents).

One thing which might add weight to this is the 'news' ident which morphed into the ITV logo. There are two Carlton versions, one with the 1989 ITV logo and an updated one with the 1998 logo, but when it comes to the Central variants I've only ever seen a new logo version. Since the 1989 logo was still in use until October 1998, this wouldn't support a change at Central 6 months earlier.

And just for some final, completely anecdotal non-evidence, I'm sure every Central programme I've seen from 1998 still had a cake endcap, I've only ever seen a tiny number of programmes, all from 1999, with the purple 'CENTRAL' endcap.

EDIT: Scrap all that, just found christmas versions, which had to have been from 1998 as in 1997 they were definitely still using the cake in by 1999 they'd be rebranded to Carlton. I'd still suggest that these idents were launched later than April though. Maybe October 1998 when the new ITV logo was launched?
