YTV began using that ident series in September 1994, most likely the 5th.
ISTR that that was the same time that "Night Shift" stopped.
cheers for that, so that us half way, yet no one seems to be disagreeing with the Carlton idents
The Carlton ones prove correct. They got changed in September 1995 to the multi coloured ones designed in-house at Central, a clip from the first showing is available on the Carlton page of TV Ark.
Just a shame there have it dated 1994 and refuse to listen about, even after it been highlighted twice to them over 6months. Not to worry TV live has taken note but of course it will take time to make changes

To be fair TV Ark would have you believe that Central changed their original ident to the simpler, non-filmed version only in 1985, which is patent nonsense.

I have to ask when did it change? I know in 1985 the cake come along but non-midland people never show it until 1988.

The ident in question was certainly in use in 1983 (Bullseye), although the original ident was also used that year, at around the same time (Family Fortunes).
I'm assuming from that that the most likely start date was September 1983.

The original ident was the one they correctly date to 1982.
The second ident was the "less explosive version of the Central ident [...] introduced in 1985".
Was it balls introduced in 1985. It was introduced in 1983 at the latest.
It's a little bit washy with Central, there's a distinct possibility that the original logo did still pop up around 1985, although I'd say it must have been a rare sight by then.
Same with the gradient blur/cake - for years they were used together on screen. I've got recordings of Central's late night (branded "Central Later") showings of UFO c.1986, and at that point all the end-boards were still using the gradient blur, and most (but not all) idents used the cake.

Thanks to everyone for there help so far: but were still not over yet:
The Carltonised Central idents were - I think - May 26th 1998.
That would make sense as the relaunch of CITV (with the return of in-vision) was on the same date, obviously a big day in Gas Street.

YTV's 3 ident came out exactly one month after C3NE, on the first week of October.
The ITV idents were definitely introduced on a Friday, probably the 1st of September. TTTV did not show the ident for most of the first day, instead using IVC all daytime even first thing in the morning. The ident was shown static for the first time at 18:30, with the first full showing at 22:00.
