* 8 May 2001 - Sep 2002 - change of the "UK" in the logo but same idents

During this time UKTV had a policy of re-using old UK Gold idents for UK Gold 2. The fireworks idents in 1999 were launched the same time as UK Gold 2, which launched with the old golden objects idents from UK Gold.

When the logo changed in May 2001 there were brand new fireworks idents launched on UK Gold. The same basic theme as the 1999 idents, but a bit more quirkly. The 1999 fireworks then moved to UK Gold 2 to replace the falling objects.

The horrible people idents from 2002 were originally used on UK Gold only during the evenings, with the MK2 fireworks staying in use during the day. During this time the original fireworks from 1999 were still being used on UK Gold 2.

Eventually all of the firework idents were withdrawn from UK Gold and UK Gold 2 and the horrible people idents were used on both channels all the time. How long this took to happen though I can't remember - it may have been a few weeks or it may have been a couple of months.

[quote="623058" pid="861330"]Coming soon SKY1 idents, i dare say this will also cover all other SKY tv channels until 2001 rebrand.

Any detail Please say!

Quote:

* July 30th 1989, Sky One was born

Well, rebranded from Sky Channel, which had existed since 1982 in one form or another and had launched in its then-current format on 5th February 1989 (though the "old" Sky Channel closed at the end of transmissions on 3rd February, displayed a menu all day on 4th February and then relaunched at 6pm on 5th Feburary).

By 30th July, Sky Channel on Astra had already gone through two idents, the version it launched was replaced by a version identical to the Sky One version but with "Channel" instead of "One". In 1990 (possibly just before the merger with BSB) there was a further change, "One" changed to "ONE" in neon yellow and this version stayed till September 1993. All of these idents were accompanied by the same soundtrack.

Quote:

* Second: Sky one with the colour in ONE, 1993,, was its 1 September 1993 ie linked with the new muit package?

Yes, Sky One was no longer free to air after that date, although all pre-publicity for Sky Multichannels used the old logo.

Quote:

* ???? October 1995 First Sky one "Block" ident
* ???? September 1996, Sky One is rebranded “Sky 1” "BLOCK"

I think 1st September 1996, it would have been whatever date the first version of Sky 2 launched. IIRC it was a Sunday if that helps.

Quote:

*????? September 1997

That's the short lived yellow egg look. Would have been after the closure of the first version of Sky 2 but before the end of 1997. September is about right.

Yeah, the 1995, 1996 and 1997 Sky idents all launched on September 1st (not just Sky One, all Sky channels, except Box Office). Sky 2 closed on August 31st 1997, to be replaced by National Geographic Channel.

I should mention, I had forgotten, the neon yellow Sky One ident had, like all the Sky idents, a re-edit after the BSB merger, it was exactly the same until the end when it zoomed to reveal the text "BRITISH SKY BROADCASTING" underneath, this version had a voiceover, "This is Sky One, a part of the British Sky Broadcasting network".

(From 1993-1995, the voiceover was "From the Sky satellite network, this is Sky One". This changed to "This is Sky One, part of the Sky Television network" from 1995-6 and simply "This is Sky One" from 1996-7 before being dropped entirely. CAs started announcing over idents in 1993, which they hadn't previously done on Sky One (mainly doing their piece over the end credits of programmes) but they seemed contractarly obliged at the time to include the strapline in their announcments, which in the 1993-5 period in particular led to some rushed announcements!

*Orange idents: Jan. 2002 - June 2003

From memory, I know that these came into use on Monday 7th January 2002. I rememeber, because the Christmas idents were still in place on the Sunday and recall thinking how late it seemed to still be in place.

The previous square logo era seemed to have the idents changed seasonally. We only got cable in February 2001 but the idents changed a few times in that one year. The ones in use when we first got cable featured a Jack Frost sort of a character hold a staff how blue icey wind onto the screen which revealed the 'Now, Next, Later' menue. Around March time, this changed to a sort of toy theme featuring jack in the boxes, toy robots etc. In the summer, these gave way to swimwear-clad young and beautiful frollicking in a beach setting. The music for these was directly from a song called Happy People which was out around the same time. The autumn ones seemed to be in a domestic setting. I particularly remember a kitchen. I recall the music but don't know what it's from. I'm sure I've heard it in other things. Then there were the Christmas idents which seemed to involve small things with faces, possibly chestnuts or something, singling notes harmonically.

Will see if I can find anything on youtube.

Youtube is a baren wasteland for Sky One continuity from 2001. That said, what I did find was this Digital Spy thread from the time...

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=5079

They're talking about the Jack Frost ident and some people thinking it was the Christmas ident still in place (confirmed that it wasn't). It then seems that the Toys idents that I mentioned above appeared on 27/02/01, despite this being a Tuesday.

so the 1998 package was just different background to match the mood of the year etc.

It would appear so, although I only remember first hand from 2001.

Here's an October 2000 example with an Autumn-themed ident towards the end of the video...

The 'seasonal' thing was definitely in place by 2000/01, but in 1998/early 99 it was just a mish-mash of their first set of of box-logo idents, at first using the Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim) remix of Cornershop's 'Brimful of Asha' as a theme tune. They seemed to have a lot, but weirdly whenever I watched the channel (mostly for The Simpsons and South Park) they always used the same one of someone slow-motion with a skateboard.

The first changes I remember came around March 1999, when the same idents were used with a different theme tune. I've got some late night South Parks recorded on tape from this time - Brimful of Asha's still being used on the 15th February, new theme's being used by the 28th March.
