It's just an ITV promo graphic from late 1991 with 'BORDER' tagged on the bottom of it...

Cheap, and not especially cheerful it must be said.

That's right; the network used this design, which was actually a c 1990 promo endboard backdrop - so in itself is not specific to Border - but looks like someone thought it would make a good ident regardless.

This is what was told to me:

Quote:
The "one to watch" launched around August 1985 for continuity purposes only with some junctions still using announcers in-vision. At this time, the ordinary Central ident was still being used at the start of programmes. It looked a bit odd linking from the cake to the globe, but it did happen. Front-end idents were dropped in Sept 1987. The networked cake production animation started in 1988 and lasted for around 12 months when it was decided b the network that only static prod caps were to be used. We obviously kept the animated cake locally.
Hope this is helpful. By the way, the Central presentation caption for acquired programming was replaced with a Central cake end ident.

But as we have seen cake was used as ident in 1986, SO I was correct it was never used as ident at start, and so was Andrew where it just flooded the place.

My recollection is that the Central cake/One to Watch campaign began at the same time as the ITV (network, produced by Yorkshire TV) One to Watch campaign

* Date for this in 1992: was 4th September 92: first day of use?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRCuhLtvjhY

LWT seemed to introduce branding at the beginning of the Autumn season so if 4/9/92 was the first Friday in September then that's correct.

That clip does make me wonder: if Home & Away was on at 6 all week from then on, what did LWT show at 6:30? They'd stopped doing their Friday evening magazine shows by then

Here's one from the 3rd January 1985 with Des singing his own version of The Cars 'Drive'
Tom Edwards mentions that it was only for that week.
