How about the Look & Read series ("The Boy From Space", "Dark Towers", and "Geordie Racer") they showed those again in January this year.

I'm 30 and watched them at primary school, so they must be over 20 years old.

i don't mind the look and read stories even if they are 20 years old

Was that the same ones that brought us Badger Girl and that one about the carnival or something similar (engage brain for memories of Year 3!!)

Words and Pictures, now that was quality programming. Was it Charlie, the little cartoon bloke that appeared on the screen? Even the kids in "Threads" got treated to that ... somehow!

The oldest currently repeated BBC Schools programme is 'Joe and the Sheep Rustlers', a Look and Read serial from 1973. The Boy From Space was made in 1971, but the version shown is the revised version from 1980, featuring new linking bits and a new introduction at the start. Oh, and transmitted in colour rather than black and white (the original version no longer exists).

Note that this is only due to the CBBC Channel's repeats of old L&R stories, though. If it wasn't for them it'd be something from about 1989.

Hey, it could be worse, look at Channel 4 who have produced very few primary school programmes in the last 2 -3 years. At least the BBC keeps producing new material to a high standard. Scottish series seem to be updated regularly, and the current vogue is for PSE stuff under the "focus" heading.

CBBC Class TV is very useful for obtaining material which was never released even on video, and an opportunity to ensure material can be recorded to DVD for use in the classroom.

Would like to see Cats' Eyes and The Experimenter getting reruns on CBBC if the unions / actors involved allowed.

That tends to be the case for alot of Schools, though the quality of some can vary, thought most of the time, the quality is rather poor, it does the job, it is relevant and useful as a teaching aid in classrooms. My old High School had tons and very litte taped since the 1990's, such as appearances of the =2=, ITV Schools on 4, TWO idents, probably more.

Though for some reason in Physics, we had a Video about planets that was a co-production between Pickwick Video and TV-am!

If all that is out of date about Schools programmes are the fashions, music and broadcast technology, but NOT the programme content, why should that matter!

Archive editions of Look And Read are shown because the teaching material is still relevant, even if the flares and kipper ties aren't.

It can only be a good thing that in this era of SATS, prescriptive curricula and national targets that so many schools programme remain relevant.

We all sat round watching a vintage episode of Physics in Action one science lesson a few years back. The video was from about 1981 (the stamp interval slide will probably date it better) and the programme was even older!

Alas, I was the only one taking notes from the screen!

The only two Look & Reads I remember are Through The Dragon's Eye (Gorwen, the Veetacore...)and one about a plot to collect kestrel eggs which included a scene about a telegram being sent in "Welsh" which was actually just English written backwards: DEDDA OT SGGE WON POTS.

Other than that I remember a very good ZigZag series on the Vikings and the HTV Roman/Celtic history series which included a very graphic image of a Roman slicing a Celtic boys' head in half.

It wasn't Kestrel eggs it was a Pereguin Falcon.

The series was called Skyhunter (if you went to school after 1992 it was called SkyHunter II and had the kids from the original 1970s series all grown up and telling the story - but still with the original 1970s footage cut into it.

The entire series is due to be broadcast on CBBC Channel on the 26th April from 9am.
