The BBC is announcing today that Danny Cohen, Director of Television, is leaving to pursue a new leadership challenge.
Danny Cohen said: "After eight wonderful years at the BBC, it is time for my next big challenge. BBC Television is on brilliant creative form. I feel very privileged to have led Television for the world's finest public service broadcaster and to have worked with so many smart and talented people. In particular, I'd like to thank my fantastic team across BBC Television, all the people who have been involved with making our programmes in the last few years, my colleagues on the Executive Board and Tony Hall, who I admire greatly.

Really, anyone who reads Private Eye might be surprised to hear this.

Deserting a sinking ship perhaps? Another 4 1/2 years of this Tory government, may be the end of the BBC, if it can not build support from Labour, the Public, and force the government to back off.

The BBC really needs to renew itself, but in this Austerity age, the Beeb wont be able to do so.

If he's managed to dismantle BBC Three into a part of iPlayer, his job is done.

I wasn't expecting this.

He had quite a meteoric rise at the BBC. Though clearly from the spoof blogs etc he's rubbed a lot of people up the wrong way in the process.

He must have had ambitions to become Director General. Perhaps he's looking to gain a few years of international experience and return as DG? Or he just knows that the end is nigh.

As Charlie mentions, Private Eye has reported on the alleged tensions between Cohen and the DG. It's likely Cohen lost and has 'left.'

Will this see the end of tokenism on the panel shows?

I'm not really buying it especially given Private Eye's history of exaggeration with tv stories.
I would say the biggest factor is that BBC productions is about to be split into a separate company which was Cohen's idea and which he is overseeing. This makes a big chunk of his current role redundant.
With no opening for a new DG anytime soon and the licence fee effectively settled, it was only a matter of time before this announcement imho.

Indeed will somebody please think of the poor white male comedians who never seem to get any tv exposure...
