No Irish actually - Billericay is in Essex!!! (Even though it sounds distinctly Irish!)

D'oh! How thick do I feel now? Incidentally I did actually get an A at A-Level Geography. Just shows how much use it was! Embarassed

I got an A in A-Level Geography too, and I'm now doing a geog degree. But it's not through any of that that I know that Billericay is in Essex!

I have just noticed that Dan's Biography has been updated on the bbc/weather page, including some frequently asked questions.

How can someone as educated as him possibly dumb down the last bastion of television?

Just seen this on the link:

Quote:
Dan began his television career in 1990 at WCFT-TV in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He soon moved on to tornado alley and KWTX-TV in Waco, Texas, where his English accent was a huge hit. At KWTX Dan not only presented the weather but also operated and interpreted the station's own Doppler radar. It was while he was there in 1997 that one of the U.S.’s largest tornadoes, an F5, hit close to Waco.

He is now a LEGEND, up there with Paul Hudson and Rob McElwee!

Right, the first question is just stupid so can be ignored.

The second question brings us to an interesting point - how on earth can he be blamed for "dumbing down the last bastion of BBC television"? Surely the point of the weather forecaster is to engage the viewer and convey information about the weather (a very complex science) in such a way that it is easily accessible to a layman. Dan does this brilliantly - his forecasts are nothing if not memorable. And they are just as detailed as anyone else's.

As Katherine rightly mentions, he is extremely well qualified as a meteorologist, having a Meteorology degree and years of industrial and broadcasting experience. If this is your benchmark for "dumbing down" surely you'd be better off picking on Carol Kirkwood or Tori Good, both of whom came to BBC Weather not from a meteorological background but from a TV presentation one. (Incidentally, I happen to think this makes no difference to their ability to present the weather - they both seem to do it very well). Or you could choose Louise Lear, who has to be the epitome of dumbing down as she can also be seen presenting on home improvement and lifestyle programmes.

To sum up, I must agree again with Katherine - Dan is a legend!

I find Corbett extremely condecending. We're not all braindead morons.

Personally, I would prefer the weather presented out-of-vision. The current crop of BBC Weather presenters are mostly a bunch of deadbeats. Jay Wynne is excruciatingly poor. Maybe if the BBC poached that blonde bimbo from Five, I would perhaps change my tune. I am of course, easily swayed on such matters Wink

Fans of Daniel might want to listen to their BBC local radio station between 3 and 5 tomorrow afternoon as he'll be popping up on various stations to chat about the chances of a white Christmas.

Not sure which ones though, I'm afraid - although I'm pretty sure Cleveland will be one of them!

I was watching.

The dreadful Ford woman wasn't on to talk down to me, so I watched the whole bulletin.

What is it with weather presenters whose names start with a "D"? Daniel, Derek, very similar style.

Great to see Dan back for Christmas! He hasn't been on our screens for a little while (a few weeks, at least) so it's good to see him returning, and to one of the high-profile shifts.

He really does bring something a bit special to the weather forecasts

If he's talking to local radio stations about the chances of a white Christmas tomorrow from 3-5 does that mean he's on the same morning shift again? I wonder if we'll see Dan with Bill on Breakfast on Christmas morning - that would be quite a double-act!
