Strictly's also not based on sob stories and trying to force a christmas number one to line someone's pockets, just people trying to dance well, people ended up getting bored of both of those things.

Let's get back on topic... Embarassed Wink

Jason is indeed coming back. It's fair to say that this is a Very Good Thing for some, a Very Bad Thing for others, and a Totally Unsurprising Thing for everyone. Wink

It's being widely reported, meanwhile, that Ashley Banjo will be the final judge. That would mean three men and one woman on the panel - same as The Voice, but unprecedented on DOI (the four- and five-judge panels of the past all had two women).

No sexism intended, of course - just my observations. Wink

Will Dancing on Ice return to Elstree Studios or Shepperton Studios for this new re-launch? They moved to Shepperton in 2011 for one series. The George Lucas Stages 1 and 2 are run by BBC Studioworks in partnership with Elstree. With The Voice in LH2 Studios, Elstree would seem to be the perfect home for Dancing on Ice once again.

The Voice is moving back to Elstree for its live shows this year.

I believe they have their own studio, with the main studio and a practice studio side by side, at least that’s what was said when they announced the new Series on a This Morning.

Dancing on Ice will be live from custom-built facilities at RAF Bovingdon in Hertfordshire.

The thing I liked about the early series of DOI is that is was different from Strictly as they had a 5 judge panel marking out of 6 and commentary etc. which made it different from Strictly, the changes where they put it down to 3/4 judges and added people who are the flavour of the month like Louis Spence and Ashley Roberts and changing the scoring system to out of 10 for me made it too much like Strictly and you went from 3 months of Strictly to nearly a Strictly rip off. I will give it a chance, Torvill and Dean on the panel is a good move as is making the professionals do their own choreography but bringing Jason Gardiner back might put me off again, we will have to wait and see.

Strictly's also not based on sob stories and trying to force a christmas number one to line someone's pockets, just people trying to dance well, people ended up getting bored of both of those things.

Plenty of people could of used sob stories on Strictly namely Robbie Savage but never did. Last week Simon Rimmer had to have injections in order to dance but was never mentioned on the main show. That for me sets apart Strictly from the rest.

RDJ posted:
I reckon ITV may be building this up again as a potential X Factor replacement and Strictly rival in a few years time if the ratings don't improve for The X Factor and The Voice fails to make the mark ITV hope for.

I think it's fair to say that The X Factor is in terminal decline at this point after peaking in 2010. Though presumably it will continue to air until ITV have something that rates higher than it on Saturday nights, or reaches the same young audience.

X Factor has been on a downward spiral since 2012, especially when Cowell abandoned the show to try and launch the US version with utter failure. When he returned in 2014 the rot had set in. Strictly now hammers it into the ground each week. I always remember the utter smugness of Dermot O'Leary on Never Mind the Buzzcocks in 2008/09 where Arlene Philips was on the show and he just gloated over the ratings difference. He is not smiling now.

Agree 100% with your post JKDerry, the fact the X Factor were so smug over ratings and the fact that Simon Cowell/Louis Walsh and Dermot O'Leary were constantly mentioning this is year we overtake Strictly makes me glad they are getting hammered by Strictly. As you mention Dermot on Buzzcocks, Simon Cowell saying Strictly recruiting people like Peter Andre means they will win etc. Bar the period of 2008-2010 when the X factor was massive Strictly has beat it nearly every other year.

I thought Katarina Witt was a great addition to the panel in 2012 - and not just because of her charms.

Alas, Louie Spence was on the panel that year too. We'll never know for sure what Katarina and Jason would have made of each other as colleagues - unless, of course, she returns to the panel at some point in this new run.

I did think the final panel of 4 worked with the balance of skating v choreography and that is what they seem to be going for again. Guess though with no singular head judge any deadlock will revert to the public vote - and bet it'll be dubbed the "ice breaker".

Interesting they're setting up in new space in Bovingdon. Even with studio closures I'd have thought one of their former homes would be able to host them.

I would personally prefer one of the skating experts return such as Karen, Robin or Nick. I always preferred the original panel of 5 with a scoring system out of 6 rather than 10. As for someone saying that there wasn't necessarily public demand for DOI to return - I would disagree as no one ever wanted it to go in the first place.

As for the studio space I can understand their reasons for moving to a different space. I would presume this would mean for a larger rink as whenever I'd been to the old live tours they always said that arena rinks were massive in comparison to the studio. I also wonder what the set will be like - the old layout with the desk in the centre was better but the design of the newer set was much more modern and up to date. That would also fit much more with the design of the new logo which suggests to me there'll be lots of sweeping lines.

Ashley Banjo on loosewomen with an ‘exclusive announcement’... think every newspaper over the last four weeks have already made that announcement.
I’ll be surprised if he’s not confirming his involvement with the revived series.

Ashley confirmed that he is to be a judge. Ruth said that it was always planned for the official announcement was to be made on the programme today but someone leaked the story early.

Debbie McGee watching her wedding video and talking about Paul Daniels all the time doesn’t count then?

One thing that might limit the success of this new series is the celebrity line up announced so far. It does seem very underwhelming if they're hoping it will be a big hit again.
