The globe has been used on BBC News and BBC One together in perfect harmony for decades.
Late 70's titles used the globe
Globe/Map was used on the 1988-1993 Six O' Clock news titles (the pack of cards titles)
And I'm sure the globe has been used in news for a lot longer than that.

Exactly, they've co-existed before and they can co-exist again and I'm sure people won't be confused!

I think that if the BBC '1' get updated a bit then BBC one could go back to using idents from 1991 - 1997 channel 4 style, if you get what im trying to say!:

Just one of many examples of the things that could be done with the'1' the only limit is the person's imagination. Look at this page to see some of the things they did at Christmas, far more inventive than the globe.

The globe was the symbol for BBC TV when it started, and it became the ident for BBC1 when BBC2 was introduced. Have a look here.

I think this was the best era for presentation, the "1" was so versatile, and as you've hinted, was a little ahead of its time perhaps! I liked the balloons eventually as they became more imaginative with the later ones, like the Blackpool Tower one.
