If it's all about the image of the channel, perhaps BBC1 would like to think what impression it gives when it goes to an important news bulletin - lets say on July 7 - with a picture of some people in leotards standing in an unlikely position.

Maybe the BBC would not use that sort of ident on an occasion like July 7th 2005? Rolling Eyes

That's precisely how they introduced the news of the Queen Mother's death.

Despite the complete ****tiness of most of the dancer idents, I would miss Capoeira if they were axed. There's something about the way it's shot that looks really professional. It is simple, with just two dancers as a focal point and an early morning (or early afternoon?) backdrop of London. The other idents are way too crowded or tacky or both.

It looks professional because it cost 700 000 to produce.

BBC Two's idents cost around £2,500 each for an obvious reason. People dancing costing £700,000? I don't think so.

The £700,000 figure was for the whole BBC One rebranding process I believe - not just a single dancers ident. This included the filming, editing and delivery of all of the first tranche of Dancer idents, as well as the commissioning and delivery of all the other BBC One branded on-screen graphics, such as the house-styles for trails, comings up, pointers etc. It presumably also included the brand consultancy and design costs.

(NB the house-style has evolved - the semi-transparent white strap at the end of a trail has now been replaced by a wipe to full-frame red with the programme name - cleverly avoiding a nasty freeze...)

There's an article on the idents in today's Daily Mail. They seem happy about it.....

Excuse me but I didn't say they cost 700 000 each. I assumed you'd have the common sense to realise that I was referring to the full package of idents that were produced in 2002, and that you'd read the article that this featured in.

Your post implied that the idents cost £700,000 each because my post, which you quoted, was specifically about one ident, and because you said:

Your use of the singular "it" suggests your attitude should not be as smug as it appears to be.

How are the BBC Two idents made? Surely it can't cost £2,500 per ident when some are incredibly simple like Screen Clean where it goes to the mark on the screen, breathes on it, scrubs the mark and then goes back to its starting point?

Don't be so foolish. I really would not think that one ident would cost £700 000 to produce. 'It' being the whole group of idents. So if I were you, stop nitpicking and splitting hairs, like an old woman and discuss television...

Too many commas and you're missing an "I'd" from that sentence.

Anyway, how are the rest of us to know you're not a Daily Mail reader?

DANCING IS TO STOP ON BBC1

BBC1 chiefs are to axe the controversial clips of dancers in between shows - but will not bring back its traditional globe logo.

They introduced the shots of young, ethnic, and disabled people dancing in March 2002 at a cost of £700,000.

The promos - known as idents - replaced BBC1's hot air baloon version of the spinning globe, which had been it's symbol since 1963.

The dancers and scenes of acrobats and rugby players were meant to reflect today's multicultural Britain.

But BBC1 controller Peter Fincham yesterday revealed there was change on the way.

He told the the Edingburgh TV Festival: "We are looking into this. It may well be that the time is coming to look at a new way of doing it."

So there isn't neccessarily going to be a change then. Besides it's hardly good value for money if they are scrapped after just three years.

Listen, I find this argument just as tedious as you pretend to, but I couldn't let you get away with condescendingly instructing the rest of us to have "common sense" about something that was misconstrued because of your mistake.
