You're right everything that came after the original blocks on Channel 4 was awful, circles, lines, utter crap. The new logos are far more innovative but the 4 SHOULD be revealed at the end, they don't stay on it long enough.

I like the fact that the 4 is only displayed briefly, to resolve on the 4 would be too obvious. The problem with them though is that there aren't enough varients and also they do seem a little out of place with the animating transparent 4 used in the junctions (which is great).

As for previous Channel 4 graphics, the circles were ok if a little arty. The 4 in a square branding they got rid of last year was very good and, more importantly, versatile

I'm surprised, I didn't think the stuff that replaced the blocks was very clever. It was like ITV's idents except the Channel 4 stars talked. The Channel 4 stings where they tapped the glass were much better.

Weren't they used briefly as idents though. I seem to remember one where they hav lots of celebs in diffrent boxes & then the 4 in a circle came up on the same side as the box one that replaced it.

The main problem with the dancers is that ideas for idents soon run out. With a number, such as the Two, it can be put into many different situations whereas with live dancers there aren't too many left that haven't all ready been done. The only others I can think of (admittedly a little farfetched) are:

Waltz
Some sort of Eastern European dance (eg. From Russia or Poland)
Can-Can
Rain Dance!

I also remember hearing that they started with 8 then were going to add another 8 to the set to get a total of 16 idents. If true, that means we are only going to get one more ident and I think that it could be the Waltz.

The only one of the "dancers" idents I actually liked (and it wasn't exactly dancing) was the Skateboarders. Mainly because of the fast-slow-fast motion of the video and the very sedate music. It's a clever mix.

It's normally shown here in the South West at the junction before the national news.

It's the only one I will actually miss.

I used to like Skateboarders until the day of the Beslan School Seige where we ended up with Skateboarders for practically every junction and hence got sick and tired of it. It is also the same with BBC Two's Sticky Label Short; I've seen 4 of their idents today, 3 of which were Sticky Label Short. I get sick of seeing it. Capoeira is my favourite as I think the music is rather classy and the actual skills of the dancers are amazing. It's well shot too with a simple, yet effective, circling.

I really think that they should make enough idents for each link during the day. With the balloon they had enough for each junction but just kept on showing the same few over and over again.

I wonder if the BBC 1 clock will make an appearance in the new package. It would be great to see it again.

Wasnt the point of ditching the clock in 2002 that it was no longer accurate because of the different speeds at which digiboxes decode the signal? Some people on here have suggested that rather than a clock making a return there would simply be a short countdown to the bulletin or a graphical ident which will both remove this inaccuracy.

But if that's the case why show Big Ben on New Year's Eve? If it's delayed it'll still be accurate for which ever system you're watching it on. Does that sort of make sense to anybody because I'm confusing myself?

Or even on Radio 4 every hour... Would be nice if they brought back the clock. We live in hope...

I thought you all might be interested in what Richard Ingrams, that stalwart of spot-on accurate reporting, without any hint of satire or sensationalism, had to say in today's Observer...

Richard Ingrams posted:
If you want to know how the BBC wastes the money we provide it with, what follows may be of interest.

Five or so years ago, the BBC, then in the control of Lord Birt, Blair's 'blue skies' thinker, filmed a series of what are known as idents, those little bits of film between the programmes that are supposed to remind you which channel you are watching.

These idents featured a huge, red balloon floating slowly over various well-known British beauty spots like St Michael's Mount or the Needles. The cost of making the films, which could just as well have been faked on a computer, was put at £5 million.

In 2001, Lorraine Heggessey, the new head of BBC1, decided to scrap the idents. 'The balloon to me,' she said, 'feels very slow. It goes across the majestic landscape but doesn't feel in touch with the viewers.'

The balloon was eventually replaced, at a cost of £700,000, with a number of surreal scenes, all featuring men and women dressed in red and black - some tangoing in the rain, others precariously balanced on seaside rocks, apparently performing t'ai chi exercises.

These were designed, according to a BBC spokesman, 'to put the channel firmly in touch with contemporary life'.

Not long afterwards, Lorraine Heggessey left the BBC to be replaced by a man called Peter Fincham. And Fincham has now let it be known that the days of the red-cloaked t'ai chi weirdos are numbered.

Who or what will now replace them? Who cares? Only one thing is certain: a very large sum of money will be spent to provide something new which we could all quite easily live without, something which, you can be sure, will be scrapped after a year or so.

Well, it made me smile...

Rather hypocritical from a newspaper which has just spent £85M to replace printing presses three years earlier than planned in order to change the size of the paper to be neither broadsheet nor tabloid...

I actually like the dancing idents and will miss them when they go with the exception of Hip hop, Tap dogs and Tango. They don't feel as though they've been around for that long.

I wonder what they'll be replaced with. Confused
