I don't know if this has been discussed before but I really, really wish somebody would get rid of those hideous dancers on BBC1. They are simply ridiculous, and even more so when you remember the balloon, the clocks and even further back, the simple globe. If it's all about the image of the channel, perhaps BBC1 would like to think what impression it gives when it goes to an important news bulletin - lets say on July 7 - with a picture of some people in leotards standing in an unlikely position.

Try doing a search and you will see this has been discussed ad nauseum on here. The fact is, whilst people may not like the dancers, they are instantly recognisable as being the branding for BBC1, and therefore do their job with great effectiveness ie to promote the channel.
a) What the hell is this? Is this an advert or something? (as the channel number is buried at the corner). or
b) God these are crap.
Channels should have a clear identity - look at the American or Canadian networks for clear logos. They don't change every five minutes - they keep a clear identity, so people know who they are and what they stand for.
I thought the ITV1 celeb idents sort of worked because they had clear recognisable celebrities involved, and should have been used to promote upcoming programmes (Baddiel and Skinner should have been on screen with a "Baddiel and Skinner unplanned is on Monday, but now here on ITV1..."). They still buried the important detail, the logo, at the bottom though.
A channel should stick to a clear distinct logo and go with it - the BBC2 '2' is probably the best example of this at the moment. Everyone knows what the channel is and what it stands for when they see this. BBC1 is a shambles, ITV1 is bland and hasn't had been on long enough to gain recognition (the logo having been chopped and changed), Channel 4 is too arty and subtle for most people to clock it, and Five is just dull.
Have to agree - the BBC idents just make me cringe while ITV just looks cheap.
Disagree re 4 and Five though ...think 4 looks very cool and Five looks very classy...much improved from its original incarnation. Apparently the shark is real....not computer graphics.
Don't worry! Peter Fincham, the new BBC1 controller who took over when Heggessey resigned (thank f*ck) said that he plans a rebrand in 2008. Three years will fly past us.
As for the best idents, Channel 4 is the top IMO. Back to the 3D logo in 21st century style. BBC2's are excellent aswell. Despite the fact that they have little variation due to one colour, yellow, in every single ident, the infamous "2" is still here and will probably be around for years to come.
Your signature baffles me. Why are you so concerned about Katherine. If you love her that much, why don't you ask her to marry you, that is if you aren't already.

I actually think Channel Four's current lot is better than all the others that came after the original blocks.
five's branding isn't as good as Four's, and perhaps not as memorable as TWO's (given the '2' is a familiar symbol), but I think that five Ident with the slo-mo bullet is pretty cool stuff...
... as was the one with the five on an ultrasound scan - although (as shown) BBC TWO had already come up with the idea, more than a decade earlier!
I think it's more than safe to say that Channel 4 and Five have the most modern and cutting edge idents of the 5 main channels.
However, nothing beats the Discovery Channel idents. Amazing!
As for the BBC and ITV... well, to be honest I don't think they're even bothering to try. 2008 someone commented upon the idents on One being changed. That would mean that the dancers are only halfway through their reign of derisory.
To be perfectly honest I like the dancers and I think that they get the message across that it is BBC ONE. Pretty much all people who receive BBC know that the dancers (almost always in red) come before a programme on BBC ONE. Similarly pretty much everyone who receives the BBC knows that the TWO against a yellow background (unless it is the new comedy idents) comes before a BBC TWO programme.
This therefore shows that the idents are successful at branding the channel, which is, on the whole, the main point of an ident.

God Joe.....2008! That's ages. I'll have more than had enough of those dancers by then. Do you realise that it would mean the balloon lasted for 4 and a half years and the dancers over 6 years!!! That would be the same length of time as the last spinning 1991 globe.
I hope he comes to his senses and reviews the pres package and idents before then.
