Dancing On Ice was a big hit, though, the first few series got enormous ratings, I think more than Strictly at the time. It collapsed a bit over time, but presumably a lot of that is due to the limitations of the format in that there is a finite number of things you can do on ice.
It was odd, though, because Dancing On Ice seemed to break all the rules of these kind of shows - it got longer as it went on, the contestants were complete nobodies, it was the most contrived programme ever made and when they had a funny Ed Balls-esque contestant in Todd Carty they voted him out straight away, and yet it used to get massive ratings. Not that I could ever watch it, in case someone died on it.
Ratings plunged after Holly left.
And who the heck thought Ashley Roberts would be a good judge?!
I think the reason Dancing on Ice wasn't quite the hit it deserved to be is that, like Splash, The Jump and whatever that Gymnastics show was called, in the first weeks they generally were a little underwhelming to watch - the competitors were naturally quite unsure of themselves.
