Rumours abound regarding the return of Supermarket Sweep, this from The Sun :

CULT TV quiz Supermarket Sweep is set to make a comeback — and Dale Winton wants to host it again. The daytime show was last on our screens five years ago.

But ITV bosses are now talking to producers TalkbackThames about bringing it out of retirement. The show catapulted perma-tanned comic Dale to fame and was a favourite with housewives, OAPs and bored students.

National Lottery presenter Dale’s infamous camp catchphrases included: “Every time you’re at the checkout and you hear the beep, think of the fun you could be having on Supermarket Sweep!”

Contestants could win the chance to fill their trolleys from the supermarket shelves. Last night, a pal said Dale, 51, would love to go back up the aisle.

The source said: “Dale still counts Supermarket Sweep among his favourite shows. There are very serious discussions about its return and, of course, Dale would love to do it.

“It’s all quite exciting.”

A TalkbackThames spokeswoman last night confirmed: “We are in talks with ITV about a number of projects, one of which is Supermarket Sweep.”

This was actually announced quite a while ago - possibly as long as a year ago!

And I think it says all we need to know about ITV - they want to get rid of CITV for more crap like this!

It was crap then, it'll be crap now!

P.S. Notice now our local Asda has self service checkouts - so how do they make sure you scan everything you buy!

It was actually announced on This Morning in April this year (there's a thread about it here)

It's interesting that as Fremantle owns the gameshow rights to many of the popular formats, that it means all these quiz revivals will be Thames productions or co-productions - never mind the irony Sweep used to be a Central production...

I'd love to see Supermarket Sweep back on the TV. Funnily enough, I caught a re-run on Challenge last week and it was great! If it does come back, Dale would have to be the host - nobody could beat him at that show.

Other gameshows I would like to see return are Strike it Lucky and Going for Gold.

If it's anything like the system they use in Tesco (NCR) then it'll have all the weights of the products loaded into the system, and as you scan them in the system will check the total weight of the current items scanned in so far against that of the bag - if it detects any inconsistencies it will have a hissy fit and call an assistant over by flashing something up on the ops screen. It'll also have a similar hissy fit if the item you've scanned isn't bagged or if you place additional items into the bag that have not been scanned. Plus there's often one or more members of staff watching at the end of the lane near the ops screen and the area is covered in CCTV.

Our Asda's and Tesco's have got the same now, but some friends of mine the other week managed to get a tagged bottle of Vodka through the Self Service (it gets you ID'd automatically BTW) and through the security beepers on the way out, and on the same note I've bought a DAB Clock Radio and Freeview box from Asda, though they aren't tagged, they've got a white security strip on them and I thought they'd go off as the Self Serve doesn't have the thing normal device that the Tills have to make the products get out of the store OK if you get my drift.

In regard to an earlier question, Supermarket Sweep is a format owned by Talbot Television, hence why FremantleMedia/Talkback Thames are discussing it.

Call me cynical, but wouldn't ITV just love this as an opportunity to nudge Ofcom into accepting constant on-screen advertising by having the supplying supermarket's logo visible on every product. I know they mentioned it in the credits before but I seem to remember the own-brand goods always had the logo blanked out.

You sure? I've only watched a couple of episodes of the new version but I'm fairly sure they've mentioned many brand names where it adds nothing but exposure for the company concerned. Maybe it is a bit far fetched, but I wouldn't put it past them.
