I'm a little perplexed at the arguements used here... You are complaining of DAB using MP2, quoting MP3 as being better... MP3 is MPEG1, Layer 3 (ie, just the audio layer of very very old MP1 compression) I don't believe there is a true MPEG3 due to the confusion over this, so the jump was made straight to MP4.

I bought a DAB radio a couple of years ago (a PURE one) and was so happy with it that I took it to work (so I can listen to beautifully clear Five Live) and bought another one for home which I use as a clock radio - it's the one with the touch sensitive handle which is the snooze button.

I don't use either to listen to stations that I didn't listen to before, apart from occasionally Five Live Sport Extra. I don't listen to commercial radio or Radio 2, and don't now listen to 6Music or BBC 7.

I'm pleased mainly because I can now listen to Five Live clearly, and Radio 1 & 4 - the other main stations I listen to - are clearer than before.

One problem... the one I listen to in work suffers from the good old digital delay. Everyone in our office has their own radio/CD which are played quietly in the background, we're always switching channels and listening to different things, but with my DAB radio now, if someone else has the same channel on analogue the 'echo' effect is unbearable. Therefore I tend only to use it to listen to Five Live (which no-one else does) and turn off and listen to my 'neighbours' radio if I wish to listen to Radio 1.

As for these people who go on about the quality being poor (eg it's CD compared to vinyl) I just don't buy that. Unless you're a real geek (am I saying that in the right place here!!!?) you'd never notice the difference. As far as I'm concerned, it may not be the best - but it's good enough!

Wasn't MP3 designed specifically for music though?

I'll have to do some research on the whole thing unless someone like noggin or lobster knows the details.

Either way, when I listen to a 192MP3 on my pootar it sounds nicer than the 192 MP2 stream of Radio 1 on Freeview.

Not from what I've heard with all the squelchy, flat sound. You probabally won't hear much difference on the portables (which is what you've got), but buy a decent Hi-Fi with DAB, then compare it with FM, or a CD. The difference is obvious, whether you're a "geek" or not. Also, like I said- many stations broadcast in mono. In the 21st century, there is no excuse for that at all. All these people promote Digital as being "better", when it clearly isn't. Same goes for Digital TV- too many horribly over compressed channels (which looks even worse on those big plasma/LCD sets).

One thing, and this is freeview mainly, that I am often asked... Most people remember the ad on the BBC explaining how digital is better "0's and 1's" not waves, I to remeber this, saying how digital can go through buildings etc without interfearance, this really isn't the case.

Does anyone else rememeber this, or have a copy of it?

I don't have the advert, but I have got some digital marketing guff (spin?) from years ago in which the BBC that explains the 1s and 0s concept, plus harps on about about the qualities of digital TV and radio. I can't remember when I got this, but it must have been a good few years ago before the launch of digital radio because in the latter parts, since it talks about trial services and whatnot.

Sadly, I do not have a working scanner and cannot upload the entire booklet for now, but I have taken some dodgy photos of the contents.

I apologise for the quality of the pictures since I have rubbish flourescent lighting in this room.which gives the pictures a horrible tinge, and switching on the flash makes a nice white spot appear in the glossy paper. Nice. Rolling Eyes
