Desmond’s was a brilliant comedy. Probably the first positive portrayal of Afro Caribbean characters I remember.

As someone of Caribbean descent, you are absolutely correct! Along with The Real McCoy.

I still play Desmond's on All 4 occasionally. Wonderfully Channel 4, yet accessible to all audiences.

Desmond's was a show I felt you could enjoy whoever you were. That's how I've always felt watching it. It made me feel better when I was going through a period of quite strong depression about 12 years ago anyway.

Gavin & Stacey is currently experiencing a backlash from certain parts of the LGBTQ community due to their use of the F word on Christmas Day.

I have to correct you. I would say 99% of gay people (myself included0) don't care at all about this (seem to come up every year) its mostly strait snowflakes being offended on our behalf.

Quite what a narrow passage of water connecting two large areas of water has to do with any of this, I don't know...

You're not correcting me. I specifically said "certain parts of the LGBTQ community" for that reason.

Fair play. I retract my correction.

Autocorrect strikes again.

FYI my favourite strait is the Pearse Canal

I'm curious to see again to see how the BBC handled the Steve Martin swearing scene in Planes Trains and Automobiles when it got its Christmas premiere all those years again. Its just been shown uncut on Sky One just now but of course its different times now, the single F word back then would have had some shock value.

Nobody's going to be shocked by single f-word after a decade of Shameless.

Channel 4 have a trend of letting 12 rated films on Film4 go out not quite unedited language wise at around 7pm. These often tend to have the less stronger swear words go out, stopping short at the full blown F word where it occurs in a 12 which tends to be once or twice at most, so chop some of it out and it morphs into a PG.

still better than ITV though who showed the same film at like some ridiculous time of day and proceeded to take all the profanity out of it so it could go out in daytime. Chopping all the profanity out of a film doesn't necessarily make it suitable for daytime.
