I think UTV's graphics are capable of being very nice just with a few tweaks. I like their own take on network graphics, like the promotions of the current ITV1 look, UTV logo look much better than the ITV logo on those endboards. I do like a lot of UTV's graphics, is just how they use them that is the problem.
Seriously, i thought every network abandonned that sort of thing with the advent of fire and gravity...
Many ITV stations had IVC whilst still independent.
Just because a round of takeovers took place that saw IVC being abandoned for reasons of cost, and cost only, in a lot of regions, doesn't make the concept outdated or antiquated.
As for the use of Arial in UTV trailers, there really is no problem with this, as long as they're consistent. It's the inconsistency that lets UTV down.
STV/Grampian use Arial as well, and no-one seems to lay into them all the time about it.
What are the figures for widescreen vs 4:3 distribution in the UK now anyway?
If there are more widescreen sets in use as main TVs, they should stop 4:3-safe zones with immediate effect, and make any new 16:9 programmes 4:3 safe so widescreen viewers can zoom them to full-size without losing content.
Well it's probably about time that TV stations stopped this practice of putting everything on 16:9 material into a "safe zone" for 4:3 anyway.
It's about time that widescreen viewers were not penalised just because there are a few luddites who resist change.
That would be nice, but there are still millions who have non-widescreen sets.
Yes, and they have the choice of watching programmes in letterbox format.
It's not as if they make 4:3 material "16:9 safe" is it?
Its not as if you need to be rich for buying a 16.9 TV these days. They should stop selling 4.3's now.
You're forgetting that everyone who has a nice 16:9 main TV has 2 or 3 14 inch portables in bedrooms/kitchens etc.
The market for small 16:9 TV's has not developed much, is still priced quite high and low priced ones are fairly poor quality, and in the meantime watching letterbox would mean you would be hardly able to see anything

Well, it didn't take too long, but yes, UTV have gone back to their old favourite Arial on the new promos!
OK, I must admit the font they were using wasn't the best but anything is better than this:
