Very traditional, TTTV (and others I'd imagine) did this every year on new years and it's nice to see UTV holding on to some old practices.

Has anyone seen the UTV version of the Mark Austin ITV news trailer? UTV have seen fit to refer to it as the "Network News", obliterating any reference to ITV they can possibly get away with. Highly amusing.

The jingle on the idents has changed to include Auld Lang Syne instead of Deck the Halls.

Colin Murphy saw fit to slag off UTV on the Panel's End of Year special - during a discussion on rural Ireland's apparent obsession with cars, he was asked for the Northern point of view, saying something along the lines of "Have you ever seen UTV - all they have is motorbikes!".

I wouldn't mind if that was true, but it isn't.

The only bike event that they cover is the North-West 200 (not that I think road racing is a good idea anyway, but that's a whole other discussion).

Grampian are using Deck the Halls as well but no Auld Lang Syne....but the gain on the music is so high you struggle to hear the announcer!!!

Why pull plug on winning formula?

02 January 2006
Having viewed the three excellent programmes on UTV for the primary, secondary and grammar school choir finals broadcast this week, it was interesting to note the comments by Alan Bremner, Controller of Television at UTV.

He said that one of the things that they did throughout their programmes was try and give young talent the opportunity to express themselves and that far the most successful thing they had done so far was the School Choir of the Year.

He also commented that in the first year they had 50 choirs and this year they had 230 choirs. That, he said, was the measure of the talent.

So, after those thoughts from UTV, why is the very successful series being dropped from the schedules?

In October, after UTV announced that the series was been dropped, in a letter to Writeback I pointed out that Ofcom, the broadcasting regulator, was allowing ITV regional companies to reduce the amount of non-news programming and that the ITV centre in London would dictate when there will be available slots for the regional programmes.

If UTV can't fight their corner to get slots for programmes like School Choir of the Year, then viewers may resign to a culture of more reality television or switch to radio or a good book.

Could BBC Northern Ireland step in and fill the breach?

While the UTV thread is about again, does anyone have any idea why UTV have suddenly decided to rebrand Learndirect as "Link up to Learning"? I noticed a few days ago that they have started showing a short film about a woman from Northern Ireland who has difficultly reading. It then finishes with a voiceover from Hendy and the slide below:

It seems a bit strange as they are still showing adverts for Learndirect but both have the same phone number on them!
