I cant speak much of the day to day presentation at UTV but I think the Christmas IVC is fantastic.....watch (if you can) the Grampian links at the moment....they are dire!!!
I have said many times before....dont knock what you have in NI it is far before what we have in SMG Land!
I wonder if the pres was live. Julian dropped a mention about the fog earlier, indicating it was?!?
It was live, there was a breakdown before the ITV News just after The Grinch and within about 30 or 40 seconds Julian gave an announcement (quite a clever one actually!) saying something along the lines of "Well, the Grinch must be still working his powers over us here at UTV. We hope to bring you the ITV Christmas Day news very shortly..."
If you plan to do a DVE move on the end credits of a programme, it's worth checking they are formatted in the standard way before you do it otherwise it'll look crap and the announcer will not know whether to talk or not and will leave a big lump of dipped sound.
And for the love of God, buy a fader to FADE the sound rather than cut to a lower level. It's been like that for as long as I remember and it's always sounded crap.
"Nice" selection of incredibly cheap ads on air at the moment for various local furniture shops...

Just on IVC, you'd wonder if its success and 'workability' in UTV is down to the fact it's a small local station, and hence it comes across as charming and homely etc, i.e. would IVC work on a national level anymore or would it just come across as remarkably naff?

No....I think it could work well on a national level...why wouldn't it??
Twice last night, Audra mentioned that Kelly had run for nearly 20 years and 17 shows.
I think it might just have been SERIES.
I'm sure she also talked about a soccer MARCH last week during the late UTV Live bulletin too.
On the short bulletin this morning, Tina Campbell read out the same story twice! She read it out once, then the VT for the next story wouldn't play, she got a bit flustered and then read the same one out again!
The autocue mustn't have been working either because all we saw was the top of her eyelids the whole time!
Julian did his usual festive message last night after midnight giving the TC staff a yearly mention, probably the only time technical staff ever get a credit on UTV.
And, for a few times, ran short on his links, leaving him standing there trying to hold his smile for a few seconds. On at least one I'm sure we were about to catch him saying something but it quickly faded to black
