They managed to fix it by 1999.

IIRC the whole "PUT THE BBC LOGO ON ALL OUR PROGRAMMES" edict didn't come in immediately with the change of logo in 1997, and at the beginning the BBC logo used to pop up in all sorts of places - the Eastenders one in the top left corner of the screen always seemed a weird one to me

That's a recreation - here's a real example from an episode in April 1998

BBC Spotlight had the best ever use of the logo in their attempt to fend off the corporate BBC News look... do you think it's big enough?!?

That's the least of the clip's problems. Superb example at 3:08 of how not to construct a sentence.

It's still an accurate illustrative example of how it was Razz Wink

It never made it to Breakfast News, even though the slanty logo had been on the previous version.

Back to the topic, in response to the TOTP clip on the first page, it was by no means the first time they'd tinkered with the logo. Can anyone remember this monstrosity?

Bloody hell. What is that!

It's the right font I suppose...

I may be imagining this, but the boxes are all different sizes! This may be an illusion with the pattern above mind

Even at the start, the rules were broken. Particularly in regional news broadcasts - North West Tonight replaced the old logo with the new, had it shimmering and flying into place - Newsline in Northern Ireland had it flying in too.

Bit off topic, but what happened in regions such as Scotland and Leeds? Both introduced completely new opening titles on the Monday with the new logo, but what happened on the preceding Saturday and Sunday? (the logo debuted on Saturday morning).

I don't think that one's too bad, actually. The blocks all animate as one, and it ends up as (mostly) white, whereas it was green and purple in North Westminster and Close Up North, respectively:

Of course, that's just because it was the same title sequence with the old logo simply swapped in for the new one. If the blocks did animate one by one I imagine the new logo would have done too, it ended up being a stopgap before the new corporate titles were introduced in 2000.

I don't see it as being a problem, just commenting that they broke the guidelines at the start.

I miss the old days when regions did their own thing. It made watching TV when going on holiday just that little bit exotic.
