The BBC Two '2' is surely another one.
Speaking of the ATV logo, I saw it on the window of a service station in Belgium. It had different letters, of which I now can't remember, but it was some sort of scooter/moped club. I don't just mean it was based on the ATV logo, it was the ATV logo but with different letters. I did try and google it when I got back to the UK but found nothing and now I can't even remember what it was called. Just thought I'd drop that weird story in here.

The Central "cake" is another one that remains timeless.
The current BBC logo is obviously not going to be here forever. It's survived this long and still looks good, but I can't see it passing the 25 year mark. The forum will be up in arms about it looking stale before the decade's out.
I don't actually know if this is allowed here, as it's not my own, but this was posted by JK08 some time ago. Obviously it's superseding something made by Lambie-Nairn so it faded away very quickly. I like it myself, very versatile, something which made the '97 logo great.
What a horrible thought

As screen definition continues to improve, I suspect the temptation to revert to the historic italic style will be irresistible. It's poor rendering on digital devices at the time, being the lead in the change to the squared blocks.

Well, some say it was inspired by CBS's logo, which still lives on to this day ?
Channel 4's yes. ATV's no. Had ATV not become Central, I doubt the logo would have survived long anyway - certainly not beyond 1993. It would almost certainly have been modernised at some point, perhaps with the letters removed from the eye.

They were dumped because they were regional symbols; the one and only reason. Also, it's not fair saying the cake would look dated considering if it had survived, the presentation would've evolved over the years. It's like if Channel 4 got rid of the '4' in 1996 rather than retaining it during the circles era and beyond. There'd be people on here saying it would be weird if that logo still existed in 2014.

It is a design classic, although not entirely original, considering how heavily influenced it was by the CBS logo. The irony is, I think the lack of logo/emblem is the problem with ITV's post-regional identity. American networks such as CBS, NBC and ABC have had the same icons with only small modifications for many decades now. No one seriously argues that the NBC peacock is 'stale' and needs replacing with something entirely different. Most ITV stations had their own emblems which had the same potential longevity. Not having one was a problem Carlton found early on. Lambie-Nairn, rather cleverly, decided for the 1996 idents that if Carlton is just a word with no icon, the idents should play on the word. It worked moderately well but when Carlton and Lambie-Nairn revisited the issue in 1999, they decided Carlton also needed an icon of its own, hence the star was added. ITV, meanwhile, has no icon and has changed its 'ITV' logo no fewer than four times in the last 25 years. I'm sure the current one will only last a few more years before a completely different logo replaces it. The closest ITV got to an icon was the blue triangle in the 1989 logo.

Indeed. Apparently in ATV's bid to renew their franchise in the early 80s, they used this logo to reflect the requirements of the IBA for the Midlands to become a dual region.
Of course in the end, this wasn't enough, and further changes were demanded including a change of logo and name, leading to the formation of Central.

Not because of the regionality per se. Apart from a couple all the logos were based on the initials of the station - C for Central, G for Granada, A for Anglia, B for Border etc. which isn't much good for a channel that starts with an I

Returning to the BBC logo, I do think the chances of them changing it in the forseeable future are zilch. In the current climate while they're having to show they're spending every penny wisely, a massively expensive and unnecessary rebranding exercise would certainly not go down well, especially with critics of the corporation.
In the longer term, I could possibly see a revised logo if there's ever a major change in structure or funding of the corporation if they want to reflect a new, dynamic direction and make a break with the past.
