Seems a bit chicken and egg the allocation of these licences. The DTT network for these services is going to be the most complex in the country, yet the programme services are being licenced with no announcement of the Mux operator. The build out should be underway already if the target on air date of late 2013 is to be achieved.

Surely you're not suggesting a government with such proven competance as the current one would have done something like award a TV Channel a licence without considering they'd need a broadcast slot?

I can't wait to see how a broadcaster who can only afford a schedule of repeats and radio simulcasts is going to produce a half hour news bulletin worth watching. Hysterical - and thoroughly expected.

The thing is though that with both the BBC and ITV services being based in Leeds, there is a real demand for local news and local newsgathering in Sheffield. However, both Sheffield Live and this new service make lots of noise about how they're a community service, and that they're only as good as the material the community delivers.

On the contrary, Mustard TV (Norwich) looks like its going to have a very strong newsgathering operation.

Just looking through the regional ITV logos yesterday (as discussed in the ITV thread) and it really is a crime how pretty much an entire section of the TV industry has been killed off in the last 15 years or so thanks to what the regulators have let ITV get away with - mainly as they kept agreeing once digital switchover came about we'd somehow not be interested in regional content anymore.

It would be much more effective to force ITV to restore non-news based regional programmes into the schedule - half an hour a week for the Yorkshire region would probably be much better than a schedule like we've seen for Sheffield replicated in York, Leeds etc. and reach more people. Even going down the Channel 6 route awarding regional franchises with the requirements to create specific content for certain localities within that region would surely be the better option.

Truly devastated I won't receive Mustard News at my address - but then when anything newsworthy happens in Norwich, it'll be on the national news anyway.

They can't go on air with the name Mustard, the whole world would laugh their arses off. Just imagine Mustard News at Teatime - with K. Etchup and M. Ayonnaise.

The whole world will be laughing whether they called it Mustard News or Norwich News or Pointless Snooze. Well, not the whole world. A handful of people in the Norwich area.

It might be the perfect opportunity for a certain Norfolk based broadcaster to make his TV return.

Seems City TV have been awarded the Birmingham licence. I'm pleased the truly local group has been awarded the licence on this occasion. Had a feeling Made Television may get it, as they'd won in other places.

This is going to be very interesting and I hope it's a success. The local media landscape in the West Midlands needed something a bit more interesting.

Wonder if theres a chance either Suzanne Virdee or Joanne Malin might get work there?

By the way, how far should the signal go?

Should I get it north of Walsall?

Probably.

City TV will bring local news and current affairs, local sports, entertainment, arts and culture programming to audiences in Birmingham, parts of Wolverhampton, Walsall, and Dudley in 2013 on Freeview Channel 8.

You'll be fine.
