Former CSC channels rebranded following Trace takeover

Scuzz to return in July???

Seems Trace management will pull the plug at any given moment when channel closures are envolved...

As others have said, they should have tested the waters by just rebranding one channel to start with, and then either extended the rebrand to other channels, or reversed it or made changes depending on how successful it was.

When they removed the interactive content from Starz last year, they said it would return in the autumn, but that never happened. The loss of revenue as a result of that may have been a factor in its closure.

A mixture of bad luck from an Ofcom legal issue caused by Sony before they sold Starz to Trace and not understanding the market and risks, which led to both channels' downfall.

I agree that they could of experimented one channel at a time, or keep the channels the way they are and add the Trace brand to every channel name and experiment with the playlist a little bit.

Yeah, in hindsight, maybe the channels should've been renamed Trace Chart (Chart Show TV), Trace Hits (Chart Show Hits), Trace Vault (The Vault) and Trace Starz (Starz, obviously)? Urban and Latina never made sense. This is Britain, not America!

Looking at the Wikipedia page for Trace Group, the first channel back in 2003 was Trace Urban so I suspect this is considered the flagship channel for them. There are loads of different themed channels it seems.

Do Trace still hold the Chart Show TV brand? Could they revert back or relaunch the channel under the old brand? They have 2 free slots to use now.

I believe the sale included full rights to the Chart Show TV and other brands, without any restrictions (i.e. they were under no obligation to rebrand the channels after a certain period), so in theory they could be brought back, but as others have said, it's probably too late now.

Another route they could have gone down would have been to have kept the channel names, and then introduced urban and latin playlists, and if they worked, they could have increased this content and rebranded the channels, or if it didn't, they could have removed it and reverted the channels back to how they were.

EDIT: Upon further investigation, it would appear that the trademarks for "The Chart Show" and "Chart Show.tv" are still owned by Sony, although these were no longer in use before the rebrand (and don't relate to the "Chart Show TV" brand):

According to this article, the sale included "associated brand assets":

Something else I've just discovered is that Stefanie Faleo, who started working at CSC in 2004, and became the face of Chart Show TV as the main presenter of Chart Show Chat, left Trace last month, after becoming Channel Manager and Head of Content, and now works at ITN.

On Twitter, Starz were promoting their closure and the move of content to a morning slot on Trace Urban as "exciting news"

Trace Urban is now the home of urban music, latin music and chart music. I wonder how long this will continue.

Perhaps they only transferred the current trademarks over? Trace Group is based abroad I think so I maybe the trademarks are there now.

I'm not sure we'll see the return of Chart Show TV though.

Interestingly there is no 'generic' channel brand apart from the Vault one we already have:

What the hell are they doing? Diluting the Urban brand with chart and Latina music during the day?

I'm suprised they haven't changed the name yet.

As mentioned by others, Trace Urban is their flagship brand, and they’re trying to make a success of it, which is probably why Starz was closed instead. Ratings wise, it would have made more sense to axe Trace Urban.

I can’t see Trace Urban lasting long in its current format. They’ve made changes before to try and boost ratings, such as the introduction of Trace Vault programming, which didn’t last.

I don’t think the current mish-mash of Urban, Latin and chart music will last very long, and expect there will be some changes down the line to the programming and/or channel branding.

Longer term, I’m not sure if Trace Urban will survive, and could go the same way as Trace Latina. If that did happen, it would be interesting to see what happens with Trace Vault, as I can’t really see them continuing with just one channel.

Following recent events, Republic Records have dropped the use of the term ‘urban’ in relation to music made by black artists, as it is seen as being outdated, and others could follow.

This could have implications for Trace Urban, not just the uk channel, but for the future existence of the brand as a whole.
