In this version you go through the regular procedure, feel incredibly silly and get a grand score of bugger all.

Didn't/couldn't get the lowest gold-minus-silver total ever, though.

That's an entirely different thing. To get a minus score implies you arrived at the dome with at least one crystal so it's more of a success than getting none at all. If you arrive with nothing your lowest possible score is zero unless you count atoms, in which case the team scored thousands.

The team accumulates 0 crystals with 0 seconds before approaching the dome & going into it.

'We are all losers together' going from Ayoade.

Yikes. What a start to this series.

Well in every game show format somebody has to claim the previously unachievable aka the worst possible outcome to gain notoriety. In this case one of the unachieved was to get to the dome with no crystals. Achieved. It couldn't get any worse really, short of having no crystals, five lock-ins and the maze having being set on fire by the computer in Future. This team will probably pop up on some retro show in 20 years time and say "I was part of the team that went on Crystal Maze and got to the dome with no crystals. We never lived it down."

Still at least whatever the next team achieves is going to be better.
I assume if a team ever got locked in five times without earning any crystals, the episode would be scrapped?

Richard Ayoade would talk about the Elgin Marbles for the remainder of the episode.

If you've ever seen that behind-the-scenes video from the original series, they would sometimes completely reset games when the contestant just wasn't getting it, so I'm sure a little subterfuge for the sake of the programme isn't out of the question. I'd imagine they'd either a) avoid any and all plausible lock-in games (i.e. only play those where you can always get to the door in 5 seconds) once 3 out of 5 were locked in, or b) give them a do-over if they got to 4 out of 5.

I'd probably argue its less embarrassing to get to the dome with sod all crystals than it is to get to the dome without any team members - with no crystals its a bad day at the office, but with no team members its a total bloodbath and potentially a waste of everybody's time.

Which is why the original question of "what happens if all team members get locked in" can never be answered from the format's point of view; I believe Richard O'Brien made a throwaway comment at some point about running around the maze on his own if it happened, but when you bear in mind the original show cost a fortune and then some more to produce, I dare say Chatsworth wouldn't be best pleased if an episode only lasted a zone and a half because the team was was too brain dead to get out six time on the trot.

Nowadays though they could probably milk 5 games out to an hour of TV - not that they'd necessarily get locked in during the first 5 games.

So this was a new record for the lowest crystals taken to the dome but did they actually win fewer crystals than the team who got to the dome with just one considering they actually won )and lost) three over the hour.

That team won four and spent three.

Watching the episode last night and it struck me how thrown together or even lazy the production seems in places. The theme tune when moving zones or in the dome, it was always timed to last for a particular amount of time so it always ended with the signature ending. Now, it just randomly stops mid theme when the action demands it with no thought and it really jars that it just abruptly stops. Especially in the dome.

Although I was enjoying the series at first, I'm already tiring of it. I think one of the main problems is that after the celeb specials and several civilian shows, it's come back this month with exactly the same games again.

The original series often used to refresh some of the games mid series to keep the variety for the whole series run. There's only so many times I can cope with the swinging planets, the reset button console and the totem pole before I get rather bored!

One game in the original show's first series was played ten times in 13 episodes, the "walk the beam" game.
That first series in the RoB years featured a shed load of games that were either crap or almost impossible. But in fairness it was still finding its feet and as it turned out there was a nice mixture of games overall and enough for variety.

The new one? I think it said it had 41 games in all which isn't too far away from the original's overall series average. Whether they play better or just look better today than some 1990s made for TV contraption is up for debate.

These episodes are still from series 1, hence no new games in this block. I did think in the original block that aired they got the mix pretty much spot on, but at the expense of the episodes now airing really.
