I think the bonus crystal thing is only for the celebrity specials, on the justification that it's for charity. Role on the normal episodes, I say.

Yes, I'm not sure why anyone is confused on this point. Not only are extra help and/or consolation prizes game show convention, it is explicitly stated by Richard Ayoade that this is the case.

I do wonder sometimes whether there is a fail-safe in the Crystal Maze format to ensure some form of climax such as if everybody was stupid enough to get locked in or they somehow ploughed through 13-15 games and were unfortunate enough to lose them all... admittedly far-fetched in both cases here but surely it wouldn't be a case of "oh well everybody's locked in, that's the end of the show". The lack of crystals for the end game is probably easy to resolve - "no crystals = no dome".

In the various tie in video games and the like (which presumably work from some input from the format holders) if all bar one is locked in, that last individual cannot be locked in regardless of game. I would presume that players would be forced to surrender crystals if they had them in buy outs before that protection, however.

I imagine in the old days, they'd have just fudged everything. Imagine these days there is something in the format bible that dictates what would happen, something along the lines of on The Chase when everyone gets knocked out.

Anyone able to confirm if the filming technique has changed. I assume with the advances in technology they don't need to play again now to get the close up shots.

I think they still do get cutaways afterwards. You never see a camera operator on the overhead shots, and yet there are always obscure close-ups from creative angles, you couldn't get them any other way. I think some of Richard's explanations are added later as well, some of them are shot from very specific angles (such as from overhead, through a grate) where you wouldn't have a camera for any other purpose.

Well, sometimes the camera op outside in the corridor followed the presenter around for the reactions i thought? Round the corner, down the corridor, anywhere really. Looked to be the same with the reboot.

I think there were a couple of occasions where the contestants ended up with just one crystal. On one occasion, at least, the team were prone to getting people locked in and they insisted on buying them out every time.

Not really happy in the order they played the zones Medieval, >Aztec > Futuristic > Industrial. Why needlessly mess with established convention? It should be clockwise or anti-clockwise.

I agree but the way the have planned the new series means you don't physically see them going from zone to zone as you did in the old series which I miss. Same with the fact they've took away the captain's choice of what game they (the team) would like to play. Cheap and tacky set comes to mind (in parts)

No spoilers but you know how someone asked what would happen if a team got no crystals...

We may be about to find out at this rate

I actually don't mind this week's.

Looks like it was a sympathy let-off from a lock in with that "build the temple" game earlier. Tom Allen was still in the water at zero. People have been locked in being far closer to the door in the original.

I know Richard O'Brien would threaten to lock you in if you still climbing up the stairs out of the Aztec Cell.

I think tonight (and previous episodes) have shown that they should never have reduced the team to 5 people, in the original having 5 people and one lock-in was acceptable, but having four people just never worked out. IMO the same applies now, so I feel in order for the team to have a chance at over 100 gold, they need all 5 of them in the dome meaning they have to use up their crystals (also doesn't help that the vast majority of games played are now Automatic Lock-Ins (don't really get why Richard is trying to make ALIS a thing as he always says "Automatic Lock-In situation" afterwards anyway))
