In terms of the kids factor my sister tried to get my nephew to watch the new series on Awful, but he got bored half way in and demanded to watch an episode of kids show Sir Peppa Pig, I dare say the slower pacing and the Spence factor played a part in that. Kids are important because it's that demographic that's helps the show on a reboot 20 or so years later.
It was always more appealing to teenagers rather than kids of the demographic that appreciate Peppa Pig wasn't it?

The youngest kid on the Christmas specials originally was 9 or 10 IIRC but the majority were 12 or over so based on the appeal of Peppa Pig it's hardly surprising Jon's nephew, age permitting, lost interest. I never thought it was aimed at children specifically as it went out at, what, 8:30pm? More likely family viewing.
Will watch live tonight but nothing can be worse than Louie Spence. Be interesting to see how repetitive it gets as they're about a third down on the number of games compare to the original but comparatively speaking most challenge shows of recent years have had virtually the same challenges week in week out with very little variation, so they should get away with it.
There's a very interesting futuristic game tonight which Scarlet plays that is a laser maze (but very different to the laser mazes seen before), the exclusive clip shown on 4Music's Trending Live yesterday made it look very difficult (especially as expected, it is a automatic lock-in). If you can, imagine this... http://crystalmaze.marcgerrish.com/games/crystalcage.htm ...but instead of sliding the bars it's lasers turning on and off.
Well that's a first, teleporting from futuristic to industrial. I wonder if they plan to have international versions of the show filmed on the set, hence having the original transitions built but not used.
