Yes, course I watched the special!!! Yes there was a new Mumsie - Stephen Merchant did state that she wasn't really his Mum - just some woman they'd found routing around the bins outside. In which case, she could play Mumsie in the new series with Richard Ayoyade, as there is no connection. I hope she does return, or whether they will bring in a new character for Ayoyade to jest with? She would be a perfect nod to the past!!

Stephen Merchant also stated the rules - that a team of people were led around 4 arbitrary zones, by a bald man.

I wonder if they will change the rules for the new series, or whether Ayoyade needs to shave his head to comply?? Laughing

I doubt they'll put a film effect on it... but then with the ridiculous TV producers' obsession with it at the moment, to the point where they're even sticking it on the Antiques Roadshow (probably one of the last shows it should be on), I admit I wouldn't put it past them.

I can't really see Richard Ayoade embracing the metafictional elements like Mumsey (that is the canonical spelling) or Ralph the butler. Or getting excited about anything at any point...

Perhaps a goth who's locked up in the medieval zone?

I'm not sure about a filmic effect but the sets and videography should be cinematic to bring it up to date the bits I've seen of Fort Boyard France recently seem to have achieved this quite well.

It would matter if he hadn't made that quip. Lipman could return to the role and everyone will have forgotten the pilot by the end of the first episode and not give a toss if they hadn't. They may decide to cast a black actress given that Richard is mixed race. Or they may create a new character, I personally hope they'll play around with more than one different character maybe one in each zone. With only one or two appearing per episode.

As much as I agree with you, there seems little chance of them going back to the old theme. Change for change's sake. Some shiny-arse junior executive saying "this is better, because it's different." Plus they're using it on the social media application campaign, so...


On YouTube, there is a video or 2 of the new and old themes remixed together that I feel sound very good!! I hope they use something like that.

It is coming back a bit sooner than we all thought with C4 announcing it will debut in June.
