What a wonderful production. Obviously a lot of the credit has to go to the creators of the live experience but well done to the production company for the modernisation of the theme and graphics and also for the hiring of Stephen merchant. He did incredibly well at bringing up to date the character of maze host whilst adding his own cheeky charm.

As for the maze (being the first time I've seen the experience) the sets are incredible. Medieval and Futuristic seem better than the original. The only thing that doesn't seem right about the experience set is the dome. It doesn't feel that grand for some reason.

Yeah no bridge or water Laughing I thought Stephen was great though as the host.

Same reason why they used Industrial and not the newer Ocean zone. Health and safety, water near electrics. It's obviously a lot smaller than the original set (which also explains the Aztec visible ceiling).

The on screen graphic said Future but Stephen said Futuristic. I always remember that zone being called Futuristic, was it a mistake on the modern graphics or did the original show also have that inconsistency?

I had low expectations of this to be honest and was pleasantly surprised. Other then a few rather small details, it really wasn't so different to the original and pushed all the nostalgia buttons. Loved the fan service with the Richard O'Brian conversation at the beginning and the Ed Tudor Pole portrait on one of the walls in Industrial Zone (even though I think it had changed to Ocean Zone by the time he took over).

All in all, a thumbs up from me.

On the original show it was referred to as Future Word or the Futurisric zone.

The map always said it was Futuristic but it became Future World vocally at some point during the O'Brien era, and Tudor-Pole IIRC never referred to it as Future World or (The) Future Zone, it became simply The Future, usually in outer space.

Yes Ocean came in with O'Brien's final series, so tonight was ETPs first night in the industrial zone.

One for the rota fans there! Laughing

It's a real shame the legend that is Jacques Antoine isn't around today and passed away before this (hopefully not) one off revival. I think he'd be pretty pleased to see the show making a comeback and it being so well received by the cult generation who followed it in the 90s and today's generation.

You think of all the great nostalgic TV gameshows which had legs, CM, Interceptor, Treasure Hunt and (later for the UK) Fort Boyard were his creations. Pure genius.

The fact that these shows are so regularly spoken about in such high regard and are remembered today shows what a talented and creative man he really was and possibly, one of the greatest gameshow format creators ever. I've said it before but I don't think he gets the appreciation he really deserves.

#CrystalMaze has been trending at No 1 in the UK on Twitter all evening with nothing but praise from viewers.

I agree fully with your post and do sincerely hope it returns again the same praise happened with Goodnight Sweetheart and we all know what happened next.

It will all come down to how well it rates, if this get more than 2 million I guess Channel 4 would seem it a hit.

Nothing to say Goodnight Sweetheart won't come back on another channel though! Quite obvious that the BBC plumped for the cheapest of the 4 shows from the season to make though rather than the best recieved.
