Do modern LED lights do the same job for purposes of lighting TV/movie sets? Although I suppose its all about the lux output and not necessarily the technology used to generate it.

But yes, the original set cost a fortune to build and another fortune to run, it ate electricity like there was no tomorrow.

Is that why it was nighttime in the Aztec Zone sometimes?

Years back when I went to Meridian they'd got some new cameras with super-sensitive CCDs which meant the studios looked (in person) like they were lit by 60-watt bulbs.

I’m sure that was artistic decision, rather than them not being able to find 50p for metre. It only happened rarely in later series and tended to be when Aztec was the final zone IIRC.

"Metre" is a linear measurement, equating to 100 centimetres / 1000 millimetres.

"Meter" is the correct spelling for a device measuring quantities (e.g. of electricity).

This sounds cool!! I wonder how Ayoade will introduce the new zone, how it came to be, how he found it etc, just like O'Brien found Ocean down a manhole cover from Medievel.

Because of the references to editing, probably something like "the writers fancied a change".

A US version, using family teams, is set to be made at Bristol for Nickelodeon:

That’s massive news. I always thought if they were to sell internationally it would have to be as a kids version as the show can’t trade on it’s history overseas and hasn’t been modernised enough for new audiences for the show not to look naff.

You’d have thought if the new version was the reason for the Eastern Zone they’d have gone for something more fun like a pirate zone which apparently was an idea when the show was pitched to CITV about 20 years ago.

As there is an American production company involved I imagine they’re be at least some changes to the format.

The article says "family" so I would assume it's not just kids in the team.

Remember that America does things differently to us, so while we might have an all-adult or all-kid version of something, its very rare that they are mixed age-wise unless its something that everybody can have a fair stab at (or everybody's related, like Britain's Brightest Family for example).

For a US version of Crystal its not entirely impossible that a "family" on that version of this show would be Mum, Dad and their sons 14 year old Zac and 10 year old Tyler from Florida who all live in a "small house" the size of the QE2.

Its also presumably going to have a cash prize and a trip somewhere expensive, because American TV likes that and they don't quite get why we're happy to play something for no financial reward and just a keepsake of a little crystal. Even the American adaption of Whose Line has to shoein a "the points don't matter" running gag.
