The Crystal Maze

New series... and a new zone

Game shows don’t really scream ‘binge watch’ to me, but only time will tell how many people watch on All4.

Works for Challenge, think it was one Easter weekend was back to back Chase for four days straight.

You can dip in and dip out of that as it’s a tv channel. You can’t do that on a streaming service.

Yes you can actually. You're just in control of when it "airs".

I think putting it on after on after Taskmaster, actually shows they’re trying to make it work. It’s a broadly similar sort of show albeit less popular than Taskmaster and it makes sense to try and capture part of that audience. I certainly think it’s a better slot than 8pm on a Friday night.

If they simply wanted to burn off the series, they wouldn’t be advertising the shows E4 run so much, in fact they could have ditched those episodes completely. Although it probably has something to do with the pandemic that they’ve suddenly appeared.

I think whether they make another series will come down to whether the Americans make another series over here again, as that must bring down the cost of production. Although there was talk of them building their own set, which should be interesting as you’d imagine they’d try out some new ideas.

I agree with this.

Also, I wonder if the All4 performance up to now is what has kept the programme alive.

I can't say I've ever watched an episode of The Crystal Maze on Channel 4, but have watched them all via All4. With more and more viewing moving to on demand, the live ratings are becoming less relevant to see if something is a hit or not.

As I expect is the case with many, I don't watch much live TV any more save what I'd classify as filler TV, channels without or chargeable on demand and occasional appointment to view TV.

Just watching one of the ‘new’ E4 civilian episodes and I think in a Crystal Maze first one of the contestants had a panic attack in one of the games so came out and the team elected someone else to play it instead (surprised they didn’t just edit that out, it was a bit uncomfortable to watch)

Also with it being several years old it is quite jarring how ‘awkward’ Richards presenting is!

Crystal Maze received 0.36 million viewers for the last civilian episode on E4 and 1.16 million for it's first Celebrity edition 2 weeks ago on Channel 4 at 10pm. Which isn't too bad.

Especially for the celebrity episode that’s really quite good. I wonder if that will have convinced them to commission some new episodes?

Also worth noting that this has got 3 slots next week, maybe they have renewed confidence?

1.16m is pretty decent for 10pm - guess it may have picked up another 200-300k with the E4 repeat. I'm finding these episodes more enjoyable than the last lot too, though it helps the last couple of episodes have been light on the TOWIE style characters and benefitted from the teams actually having a few braincells between them.

That’s not exactly a show of confidence, is it?

I noticed this last night but thought I'd see if anyone posted the news. I thought the ratings weren't too bad recently? Or is because the celebs aren't well known? It must be the latest ever new trip around The Crystal Maze?

Should have pushed it back another hour and called it Midnight Maze.
