In todays "Mirror" there was an article about a crisis meeting to discuss BBC1's lowest viewing figures since June 1998. On wednesday February 18th only some 2.4million viewers tuned in to see "Family Business".A special crisis meeting was being held as a result.
What can the outcome of such a meeting be? I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about what sort of conversations might be flying about at such meetings and what sort of outcome can be expected?
Incidentally, the report went on to say that ITV chiefs were worried about appears the lowest ever viewing figures for the Brit awards.

Expect EastEnders to make a new outing on Wednesday nights. The obvious solution. Everybody for whatever reason tunes in because Kat slapper Slater is the best thing to ever happen to EastEnders (the sentiments expressed in this paragraph do not necessarily echo the views of the post author).
CRISIS! Low Viewing Figures for BBC1
According to a newspaper report.
Well it has been widely reported in most of the press today and the viewing figures are there for all of us to view!
- BBC1
has
been on the decline in primetime whereas ITV has been increasing viewers in primetime.
- ITV still performs
poorly
in daytime compared to BBC and the overall average for the day.
- So its all swings and roundabouts really!
But from an advertising point of view the primetime slot is the most precious and so ITV use the primetime viewing figures as an inidication of what is happenning at the channel. Whereas BBC is non-commercial it uses the whoel day figures more often than not in press releases and obviously hasnt got the same financial struggle to get the viewers in as the money is guaranteed regardless of performance!
It says Wednesday night was BBC1's lowest share for five years, which is quite surprising considering there was nothing *that* special on other channels. The day five years ago was when a World Cup game was being shown on ITV which is understandable
Apparantly BBC1 was fourth watched channel on Wednesday. i.e BBC2 and even Channel 4 also had more viewers.
When you look at the type of stuff BBC1 are showing in prime time lately (The Food Police, Perfect Holiday, Spy TV with Ian Wright, Mad about Alice and Open All Hours and Only Fools and Horses repeats right in the middle of prime time) you can understand why their peak time share is falling
Why don't they get some decent programs on BBC ONE instead of just crappy drams and pointless ancient films and lousy gameshows?
Here are my suggestions:
More modern films (ie 1990s - present day) during the evenings and at weekends
Less pointless gameshows during the weekends
More comedy shows at weekends and evenings
More entertainment shows at weekends

But the BBC1 controller (she who shall not be named) wants more reality and makeover shows. Oh and "The Two Ronnies". Do you think that the position of new controller for BBC1 may be available if the ratings keep falling as they have done recently?
I wonder if ITV's overall share will increase this year? It's quite obvious that BBC1 make the majority of their gains in daytime and on a Saturday night. Every other time, ITV tend to wipe the floor with them (even when they were going through a 'crisis').
BBC ONE gets criticism for getting ratings which are too high (programmes too populist) and criticism for ratings which are too low (not popular enough) so really can't win.

I hope so yes, I don't think she has done a good job at all and has made quite a few mistakes in her choice of which programmes to commision and which idents to scrap and replace with a lacklustre offering

Why would she be canned for bad ratings though? As long as she can show that it wasn't exactly her fault.
Why more reality shows though? What's the point of those? They're all hype and no substance really...plus they're not even memorable (nobody will be watching re-runs of them in 20 years time).
They're the television equivalent of "People" magazine....read it once and into the bin it goes.
I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that the BBC needs to be more experimental and less populist. And, they need to attract and RETAIN good writing, directing, producing and acting talent so they can establish long-running series that have large fan bases. That'll not only up the ratings, but keep them up in the long run.
