Nice opening to the new series of Crimewatch Roadshow today, featuring Rav talking about his journey from copper to tv presenter all shot in and around BBC Cardiff - leading into Studio C1. First time I've seen behind the scenes at Cardiff - and it reminded me of the way Pebble Mill used to feature their building. I think this is the first time C1 has been live to the network in years (unless anyone knows any different.)

It's not C1 - it's Studio 1, which was the radio concert hall until the BBC National Orchestra of Wales moved to their new home in Cardiff Bay last year. It has occasionally been pressed into service as a TV studio in the past, but the transformation is more permanent now.

C1 is in fairly constant use for Pobol-y-Cwm recording, but has hosted a number of live Children in Need programmes - including live inserts to the network programme. It's also had the live final of the BBC Wales talent show 'Just Up Your Street', although this was a Wales-only transmission. Question Time has come from there several times in the last decade, but of course isn't live.

Ahh - well that was one of my questions actually, as TV Studios History does allude to the fact that C1 has a block booking for Pobol-y-Cwm so I was wondering what was happening for the month. I didn't know that Studio 1 had been rigged as a TV studio as well - another similarity with Pebble Mill! AIUI Studio 1 at the Mill also had a basic scaffolding lighting rig installed at one point, and was upgraded to a better rig to allow for programmes like The Really Useful Show to be made on the same day as other programmes set up in Studio-A.

The reason I assumed it was in C1 was that in that very pre-titles sequence that originally provided the spark for this typo-titled thread ( Embarassed ) was that Rav was pictured outside the Chalk-Board for Studio C1 which was clearly marked up with "Crimewatch Roadshow" as the programme name..

I think the main Crimewatch comes from Studio 1 (not a TV studio) with an OB truck parked outside, and a permanent standing set and permanent lighting set-up. I guess Crimewatch Roadshow is coming from the same studio in Cardiff as well?

(Slightly bizarre move of Crimewatch to Cardiff - particularly as Cardiff don't appear to have HD facilities yet. Had the show stayed in London I would have expected it to be HD this year - as Watchdog now is)

It's like the Antique Roadshow, but with coppers tryin' to catch the crims, like innit.

Didn't see it myself, but they probably used the production board outside C1 as Studio 1 doesn't have one!

Had a look at TV Studios History. There are a couple of errors. The building opened in 1966, but there were no TV studios there until 1974 when news and current affairs opened C2 - which was also used for other small-scale studio productions. C1 didn't, in fact, open until 1979. In 1980 the former studios in the Roath area (Broadway is NOT in Splott whatever you might read elsewhere!) closed.

Pobol-y-Cwm will be moving to two new studios and a much larger back-lot at Roath Lock in Cardiff Bay http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-12239947 later this year, so it remains to be seen what level of use C1 will get in the future.

Would expect Crimewatch to move into C1 rather than the make-shift OB truck set-up as now ? Presumably Crimewatch Roadshow will also move in.

Presumably they'll upgrade C1 to HD though - Crimewatch is beginning to stick out as an in-house SD show.

As far as I'm aware there are no plans to move Crimewatch out of Studio 1 where the set can stay from month-to-month without affecting any other production work.

Aren't BBC Wales set to move out of Llandaff anyway in a few years? Maybe they won't bother upgrading it to HD? I suppose there's a chance they could use an HD OB Scanner running the studio to bodge it to HD?

Hadn't heard the rumour of leaving Llandaff.

AIUI BBC Wales don't have an HD scanner at the moment, they have a long-term deal with SISLive (possibly stemming from the BBC OB Resources days) that gives them an SD OB truck for use on Sport, which is also used by Crimewatch. Don't know if Crimewatch Daily is also using this facility or a different way of working.
