Spinning off into a radio discussion briefly but have the BBC always used the Test Match Special branding for all of their radio coverage? Also is it the only thing R4 LW opts out for now?

No - Test Match Special used to, as the name suggests, only be used for test match cricket commentaries. Now it’s used for the majority of BBC Radio cricket coverage.

Radio 4 LW still has several other opt outs eg. Yesterday in Parliament at 8.30am, the Daily Service at 9.45am and Shipping Forecasts at 12.01pm and 5.54pm.

EDIT: Just checked as was doubting myself and it appears the 12.01pm Shipping Forecast has now ended.

According to the long wave schedule on the BBC website the 12.01 shipping forecast was broadcast this afternoon.

Midday Shipping Forecast is still very much a thing, otherwise the only other opts are indeed YiP (when Parliament is sitting) and the Daily Service. Also, the Radio 4 LW network is now automated, and is controlled by the BBC World Service playout system. The move to automation is why you'll often notice a bit of a hard cut back to R4's FM output when Test Match Special finishes.

Just a quick question to anyone who knows.......

I know that the R4 Long Wave variations are on DAB, but does anyone know how you get them on smark speaker? I usually struggle to get Alexa to accept rational requests, but I particularly can't find a syntax to make her play the Morning Service .

She really annoys me by not playing France Musique , she can play France Culture , Inter etc, but produces something called trance music if I dare to request France Musique. Trance Music isn't bad, sounds a bit like Late Junction....

Try the following:

"Alexa, play BBC Radio four LW" (as in 'ell doubleyoo', not the word 'longwave')
"Alexa, ask the BBC to play BBC Radio four LW"
"Alexa, ask Radioplayer to play BBC Radio four LW"

One of those should work. I've always quite enjoyed the idea of someone listening to R4LW via an online stream Very Happy

Cricket doesn't go out on the DAB radio 4 - try "play BBC 5 live sports extra"

So the 5 Live switch means the Wimbledon final isn't on analogue radio, a decreasing but still significant portion of the radio audience.

That's stupid. Since 5 Live Sports Extra is DAB and not analogue, they should use Radio 4 instead.

I would imagine the amount of people that want to follow the Wimbledon final, above the rest of the days sport, who’s only means of doing so is through analogue radio must be pretty small.

Presumably its available on demand on the BBC 'skill' if you have that enabled? Obviously that's not live but should be soon afterwards

Probably quite a few I'd have thought - anyone who's in the car or otherwise not near a TV tomorrow. The final that Andy Murray won a few years ago I had to find out what was happening by listening on MW in the car.

It'll be a controversial decision, cricket fans are used to having to listen via digital radio, online or Radio 4 LW/MW. Those regular listeners to Wimbledon won't necessarily be.

Like the TV coverage of Wimbledon, it's far easier and better just to leave things on the channel they're scheduled to be on
