Yes, another anti-ITV thread I'm afraid. Even as a fully paid up member of the ITV Lovers Association, there is only so much a man can take.

Anyone else sick of ITV plugging their latest reality celebrity flop at every single junction, at the expense of actually bothering to tell us what the next programme is ?

Case in point just now, the whole purpose of the anno was to tell us about the 12 singleton celebrities (yes singleton, not simpleton) who we'll get the chance to vote off the island come Monday. It's Saturday afternoon, who cares ? No mention of what was coming up now, nothing. So I had to flick to teletext to find out it was a film I had no interest in viewing, before switching off. (maybe that's there ploy ?)

So, who's bright idea was it to turn ITV's continuity department into an extension of the marketing department ? By all means, mention it, cross promote, but don't take over the whole flipping junction. I don't blame the individuals particularly (although not a patch on the golden days), but what they have is a very narrow remit to flog this latest desperate attempt at ratings short termism, with no room for any improvisation and creativity. Do they actually need an announcer there today, just trot out the same clap trap at every junction, that's another salary saved surely ?

On the flipside, Five's continuity is fab. Especially the likes of Trish, her anno's through the night before delights such as Sons & Daughters are fab, warm and witty, actually making references to the programmes. I don't care if they're pre-recorded or not, they engage the viewer as a lead into the next programme, surely this is the purpose ?

ITV take note, but they won't.

I agree - I think Channel 5 continuity is particularly excellent at the moment. A great line-up and some great freelancers in the form of Ted May and Trish - a real breath of fresh air.

ITV is really stale - it was poor at best when it launched national continuity back in 2002 but now it's just dire. I really don't understand why they have such poor continuity - the idea was that the "best of" announcers from across the ITV network would sign-up to the team and create a really good sound. The reality...we got the really bland and poor announcers from different ITV networks and none of the heavyweights signed up. Perhaps they realised it was a poor idea...

I'm not sure what the answer is to be honest. The team is just full of poor sounding announcers who just don't sound any good.

Channel 5 truly is leading in terms of presentation at the moment - a very nice and classy image now greets each programme and announcers that sound as if they do actually care about the next programme make you glad to tune in. Something ITV back in the regional days used to capture perfectly.

Even in Wales we have had Celebrity Love Island rammed down our throats!

At this rate I may not choose to tune in at 9pm on Monday as a protest! Just like NOT buying the crazy frog ringtone or single. There is only so much exposure people can cope with before they turn off.

I thought they might have learned their lesson over the Celebrity Wrestling debarcle. Adverts in the papers, billboards, phone kiosks and idents and promotions littered throughout the week.

Surely when ITV heavily promote anything now it (might) stink of desperation and give the viewer the impression that the programme wont actually be any good (a la Celebrity Wrestling, Hells Kitchen 2...etc)

I think ITV are dammed if they do and dammed if they don't. The only thing to say is that IF Celebrity Love Island is any good the newspapers will generate enough (free) publicity for the programme and so the viewer will at least have a chance to absorb information about the programme from the newspapers and make an informed choice rather than being 'brainwashed' into tuning in!

I agree that the continuity on ITV is very poor at the moment, at least here in Wales we have our own announcers so its not quite as bad. But in particular one of the female announcers on the national team is really appalling.

I am also sick of seeing promotions for Celeb Shag Island on nearly every junction recently. Rolling Eyes (and im a fan of ITV normally as well Wink )

Typhical of this forum that you slate ITV for plugging their celeb reality shows then in the next sentence praise the continuity on Five, which for the last couple of weeks has been continuously plugging The Farm (though the ident is very nice!).

Well, what can one say. ITV1 continuity DOES leave much to be desired. Why come off the back of a promo (any promo) and mention it again. Yes, pick up from it, but use it to link into your next programme. An art, I'm affraid that is not used by the current crop of announcers (with the exception of Mr Seed and Mr Rogers)
How many of you have noticed that ITV1 no longer promotes anymore than 24 hours in advance. If linking into a blackbuster movie (ie something that Sky would have shown months in advance) and another BIG movie is scheduled later in the week - why not promote it. No, instead they promote as much reality crap that is rapidly losing them an audience.
Continuity on ITV1 is brash, crap and lacks any sense of imaginitive writing skills. Please Please bring back the people that know how to do it, and whatsmore have got a PASSION for it.

Well considering this thread is about them plugging Celebrity Love Island which is on on Monday then you are talking rubbish.

Although I agree that many of the announcers are dull on ITV1 at the moment, here we've got complaints about ITV1 promoting a future programme and not telling you what is on next and also you've got people from SMG and UTV land complaining that all their announcers do is tell you what is on next, they obviously can't win!

Ive noticed on ITV1 Wales there will be a trailer for a program and then an ident and the announcer will promote the very same program that was promoted in the trailer just before it, often using simular words.

I dont know if this is because ITV Wales announcments are recorded or they dont know what selection of trailers will be played. But it does look very stupid on screen

I really Don't like how they try to sell the news

"...election fever is hotting up at the moment, catch up on the ITV News here next on ITV 1 then later..."

Trish wouldn't announce it like that!

BTW Has Glen "retired" from continunity annoucning, I haven't heard from him for a while

Absolutely. I've no problem with special idents for certain programmes but that should be all that's needed - with the visuals on screen, the announcement should be concerned with the here and now. Constantly bleating on about what is inevitably more crap might only prompt viewers to look elsewhere for entertainment on Monday night...

Time to enter Victor Lewis-Smith mode and show how the idents look to me:
