I think Micheal Howard should be leader. He has the experience, weight and charisma needed for the job, even if he is a little old. Unlike the rest of the political parties, a tory PM doesn't really need to be liked, just to be respected. Howard would give Blair and Brown a good argument in the commons, which IDS failed to do.
One thing that is not great is that the tory party will have 4 leadership elections in 8 years. Keep chaning the leader and splitting the party along differrent lines won't do it any good at all.

Can anybody say there is anyone amongst the Tories that they would honestly like to see as the replacement ?
Howard - too old, and has something of the night about him
Letwin - a member of the public said he looked like a twit on the news earlier, probably sums him up
Davis - not a typical Tory background, but a nobody with little experience of anything
Teresa May - no Thatcher
Michael Ancram - Mr Bland, looks like a bank manager
John Redwood - Vulcan
Whoever get's it will only be a caretaker, because sure enough once they lose the election, we'll have this whole process again.
Portillo would be my choice, but he's not running apparently.

BBC seemed to go totally over the top with their coverage of IDS vote of confidence.
It was very good and indepth but a bit of a waste of money for what the story actually was. Ive never know such a huge amount of airtime given to a shadow party and the voting out of a very boring, bland character to replace him with another bland boring candidate!
I cannot remember such coverage previously for a vote of no confidence and still cant understand why this one was such big news.
BBC and Sky were totally prepared for it whereas ITV1 had the ITV weather at 18:28 and started the ITV Evening news at 18:30 and continued through to 19:02. Most of the programme was given to the story with a couple of other shorter reports about USA fires, Footballer problems and um thats all I can remember!
Channel 4 and five were lucky that their news programmes were already broadcasting but I suppose ITV1 deemed it not financially viable to replace a 'ratings winner' Emmerdale with a news special of some bland people vying for position in the tory party and let the advertisers take precidence.
Im sure if ITV1 did displace Emmerdale there would be many more people complaining on here saying 'thats what the ITV News Channel is for...' etc etc so why put this on ITV1.....
Mark Austin and Mary Nightingale continued coverage at 19:02 on the ITV News Channel and had lengthy discussions with Nick Robinson and with some guests in their newsroom and tory politicians at Westminster with John Ray.
ITV's coverage was a bit lacking but I suppose it matched the general feel of the story and the people involved.
All three produced good programmes but feel BBC and SKY was a bit over the top for the ocassion.
I for one actually quite like Iain Duncan Smith and is the only Tory I would've considered voting for - the other are a waste of space.
ITV News Channel coverage is now continuing with Alastair Stewart! YAY

But hasn't he been there done that? He got voted out as Home Secretary years ago. He's too old and bland and won't appeal to younger voters any more than IDS. In my opinion, the Tories will die unless there is a major revamp int erms of personnel

I agree about Howard, he's part of the failed and hated Tory government that got their ass kicked by Labour. He's past it.
Who is this appalling woman doing Littlejohn, she's shocking ?
