Rather funny and according to an article on Media Guardian, Iain Duncan Smith insisted on waiting until the end of Doctors before he made his speech, as they said his speech was going to be at 2.20pm, but it went out just after 2.35pm when BBC One joined BBC News 24.

That's funny because the article I read on Media Guardian suggested that the BBC asked Mr Duncan-Smith to withhold his statement so they could do a simulcast on 24 and One straight after Doctors.

I quote from this page:

Quote:
The beleaguered Tory leader was due to speak to the gathering crowd of reporters in Wesminster at 2.15pm, when BBC1 was in the middle of an episode of the daytime medical series [Doctors].

But when his aides emerged to say that he would be a few minutes late, corporation staff suggested he wait until 2.35pm when Doctors was due to end.

BBC bosses were reluctant to break into the programme because such interruptions infuriate regular viewers.

Mr Duncan Smith duly obliged, striding out of Tory HQ just after BBC1 switched to a simultaneous broadcast with BBC News 24.

Ah Right, Thanks for correcting me on that. It's quite funny that the BBC have more rights than him, I was watching ITVNC before and you could tell they were running out of things to do before 2.35pm, with Nick Robinson talking to Chris Rogers for about 10 minutes.

I think that it was more a case of IDS welcoming the opportunity to speak live to the nation; I suppose in the end both he and the BBC were happy with the arrangement.

I'm definitely an Andrew Marr fan, I think he's brilliant at what he does. Nick Robinson is just a cheap pretender.

Yeh yeh, of course Nick Robinson was the best thing since sliced bread when he worked for News 24 wasn't he ? Laughing

Nick Robinson was one of News 24's greatest losses. He has an unusual flare and good wit. He asks challenging questions to unsuspecting people - the "have you got blood on your hands prime minister?" classic.

There is also a specially extended Six O Clock News with Huw Edwards tonight.
Guto Harri on the other hand is totally useless and asks totally scripted questions. Nick Robinson and Mark Mardell are clearly the best politcal editors on television..

Oooh, cutting! No, I was never keen on him to be honest, and I certainly don't think he's as good as Andrew Marr. Marr just seems to have a wit and knowledge that places him miles ahead of the field.

Well reporters, correspondants, editors they all do the same thing - report on the story, and the positions keep changing.

Don't most pass around mics or have on a stand which they walk up to á la Montel? Wink

No - that is almost certainly the exception.

The reality is that many of these news conferences are called at the last minute - meaning it is a scramble to get a mic to the main speakers and cameras rigged and cabled. Pooling sound would be desirable - but is unrealistic in these set-ups - as it may often require extra kit.

The "hand round the mic" and the "walk up to mic" style events are normally those that have more set-up time, like MoD briefings etc. where often the sound is provided by the event organisers.

Well they should take a couple more mikes and point them at the reporters. It's really stupid when u can't hear the questions! Evil or Very Mad

BBC News Online has brought back it's very very useful "reporter's log" for the IDS vote.

I heard him mention that last night towards to end of 10o'clock news but Sian, which did the 3:20pm update, said she would be back with George for the 6o'clock news!

Also does anyone know what time the regional news is scheduled? Stuart Norval said "We think we are on at 6:20pm" Laughing

Perhaps George and Sian will do the normal program until 6:30, then there will be the regional news, and then Huw Edwards will present the extended six o'clock news from seven o'clock.

Anna Ford said on the 1 that the 6 would be extended, but gave no more information than that.

Looking at the schedule, what do we think will be pulled to make way for it? The National Lottery show perhaps?
