To quote the Welsh National Anthem (unofficial version!!)

We don't want to be your enemy
But when we're on the field, it's red white and green
Got beat by the Irish, got beat by the Scots
The French had a struggle, but you're the ones we want
We want...

As long as we beat the English
As long as we beat the English
As long as we beat the English
We don't care, we don't care!

It has to be said, the Welsh do take every oppurtunity to make themselves look bigger than the english. Why, just the other day,in a welsh lesson, we were talking about history of the welsh language, and the teacher said "The welsh language dates back to (some year I can't remember) so it's actually been around LONGER than english." "Hmm yes, that's just the kind of bigotted snobbery towards the english I've come to expect from you welsh." It does annoy me when they do things like that.

Has anyone seen the charlotte church show, and how much she forced wales on everyone like that? Mind you, here I am moaning about the welsh and I'm still suckling on the welsh teet. Razz

Well not really, if it is actually true that Welsh is older than English (and I believe that is the case) then it's not really bigoted.

EDIT: Hmmm, looking into it it would seem that that isn't necessarily true -- both languages date back to around 500AD, English possibly slightly before that, so it would seem that your teacher may in fact be talking rubbish. Might be worth researching a bit further to show them up if you feel strongly enough about it.

The one that cracks me up is the way Welsh, Scots and Irish folk come over to England, settle down here and then proceed to continually berate the English and remind everyone how much better their home nation is.

Well OK, fair enough, but why did you settle in England then? As someone who is more than half Irish I have to say that the Irish in particular seem particularly guilty of this one.

This would be your extensive experience of meeting ALL ex-patriots currently in England?

We're all entitled to an opinion here of course, but perhaps we should try to avoid sweeping generalisations.

Sorry, I think the word "some" was lost in the translation from brain to keyboard there. Of course I don't mean all ex-pats......

I am told by someone who took part that alot of the booing etc was because there were problems with the buzzers which were favouring England and which they were frantically trying to fix ..everyone was aware of this at the studio I gather....hence all the ribbing of England! Laughing

Oh behave all of you. Poor old England (population 55 million plus) can't take a bit of ribbing from its little neighbours (combined population about 8 million)? England is just seen as the big bad wolf. We like beating you because you are so much bigger than us. Celtic ppl take great pride in their identity, moreso than English people I find, which is why on the whole some English take pride in their regional identity (i.e. Yorkshire, Cornish etc).

And YCNY was nothing more than a re-jigged "Test The Nation", but instead of Doctors, Taxi Drivers etc, which displays just as much booing and jeering, it had countries. Which meant it gave rise to accusations of racism. Overreaction anyone?

Plus I imagine if there had been a French or German team the English team would have been booing them just as much.

Alexia, on the contrary. English people are VERY proud to be English but the authorities in English local areas are forever trying to diminish the amount of Englishism in fear of offending "ethnic minorities". Therefore we are generally a tolerant, integrated country, friendly and welcoming. So we feel pride in where we come from and like other countries, feel protective towards our home nation. There is now more support in England for the break up of the Union than there is from other home nations.....why is this? If England were booing Wales, the response on here from the smaller nations would have been different and well you know it!

That reminded me of the Scottish version - McGlashan....observe and enjoy (one of the best comedy characters ever)
