Today is Countdowns 21st birthday, however celebrations have been blighted by the fact that the programme has lost 25% of its viewers since Channel 4 rescheduled the show to 3.15pm.

It would be interesting to see how Countdown's replacement is performing in it's old slot, but no doubt C4 will be bloody minded and not move it back regardless. Carol Vorderman has said that they've had quite a lot of letters of complaint and that year on year, Countdown had raised viewing figures for the old slot by 54%, which only further demonstrates how ridiculous a decision this was.

Apparently Carol & Dickie are about to sign contracts up to 2006, but would like to carry on beyond that.

With Channel 4, seemingly losing interest in the show, don't you think ITV ought to make a pitch for it. I'm sure it would perform very well in the problematic 5pm slot.

I don't think Channel 4 are losing interest in it. From what I can see, they're using two popular shows (Countdown, Richard & Judy). to sandwich other shows in between.

Channel 4 would be very silly to lose it, as there's no doubt that ITV would pick it up immediately!

I can't see how today can be Countdown's 21st birthday. Channel 4 did not go on air until the 2nd November 1982. Therefore it won't be 21 until Sunday.

Well, it's either a case of mark it today 31st October, or a day after the event 3rd November. It's there abouts anyway, Countdown celebrate their 21st birthday this weekend, better ? Mr. Pedantic. Rolling Eyes

21 years? Old folks' homes across the nation will be rejoicing. Their residents make up a good 90% of Countdown's audience.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but (IIRC) didn't Countdown originally start out as segment of Calendar?

Nope, it started out in France.

In that case, didn't the UK version of Countdown originally start out as a segment of Calendar?

I believe it started out as Calendar Countdown, and was one of a number of spin offs from Calendar, which YTV put in the regional slots. It wasn't a segment of Calendar, it was a stand-alone programme.
