I think Digit Al's a good way of demystifying scary technology for a lot of people. His job is to make sure people know that switchover's happening and to act as a helping hand to those that mean it most. If on the most basic level all he does is act as a 'signpost' for switchover communications then surely that's a good thing?

I don't think he is "demystifying scary technology". I think that's what he's supposed to do, but I'm not seeing that in the narrative of the commercials I have seen.
Perhaps if he leads his "mother" by the hand to a shop selling set-top boxes, or connects himself to a television with no picture bringing it to life?
Do you see what I mean?
The focus has to be on the television rather than any other family activity.
If, in mitigation, he is only acting as a signpost then a less complicated signpost would achieve more.
