How about Stephen Fry as the new presenter? I know he does QI but I think he'd work well on this, anyone agree?

I think the main problem of the programme at the moment is the choosing of Southern based presenters. Hence they quit within a short period of time. There are 2 solutions for this:-

1. Move the filming down south - a huge cry from OFcom etc but the viewers wouldn't really notice a difference ; or

2. Use northern presenters

Names can be banded around, and after many thoughts, I believe that Greggles could actually be good, but it will eventually all come down to cost - if its cheaper to film in London then that's where it will go, or cheaper to use Northern relatively unknown presenters they will follow that route.

Remember it is an ITV programme, although made for Channel 4, and costs mean everything to them - no matter what!

I just don't see it being the same, viewers like familiarity, and without the original presenters, Countdown just ain't Countdown, if they move it down South, that too would be a mistake.

In this celebrity obsessed era I'm not sure Channel 4 would accept complete unknowns like they did in 1982

To continue the regional presenter tradition, I think Harry Gration should present it (He's northern, used to be a teacher and is known a bit outside of Yorkshire). I know he works for the BBC, but if he asked for reduced work on Look North they'd accept it as they wouldn't want to lose him

Do you really think that the average viewer watching an entirely studio-based show will really notice?

Yeah I agree with this. Countdown has a strong loyal following and that won't go away if Carol leaves. All she did was put letters up. I think the Countdown viewers won't be too concerned about this development. Countdown isn't going away.

This may sound like a very daft idea but I think Greggles would be a natural for the show. He knows the show, he knows the audience, plus isn't he around the same age as what Richard W was when he first presented it in the Yorkshire region (Calender Countdown)!

I could go with that idea as he is not an old has-been presenting the show.

With regards to a replacement for Carol, I'm sure there are many "regional" presenters that could easily fill the job such as Granada/Yorkshire/Tyne Tees Weather presenter Jo Blythe who has a decent University degree and is quite intelligent!

Yeah, and then afterwards we can get Daffy Duck in the Dictionary Corner. This is Countdown, not cheap, late night TV.

so let me get this right with regards to your comment - you are a flippant person who does not actually think about other people's suggestions and that because Greggles is mentioned it HAS to be wrong?

Firstly Greggles for many years was the warm up man on the show - how many other presenters of other shows have advanced from warm-up man to actually presenting the actual shows!

Greggles was also a damn good friend and very akin to Richard W. Their humour is very simialr, their style is exactly the same and most importantly he is as eccentric as what Richard was.

Therefore he knows the show, he knows the regular audience members, he knows the crew and most importantly he knows how to get the corret pitch of the show unlike others mentioned.

With regards to Jo Blythe - she has done presenting work for quite a number of regional programmes in each of the old Yorkshire/, Tyne Tees, Border and Granada regions and she is a fine presenter with brains and not bad looking either - ticks all the criteria.

I presume you would go for faces that are already on TV and as such would cost a hell of a lot to bring on board - or use old has been -list presenters.

Any, if anything, how close do these presenters actually live to the Leeds studios, compared to others mentioned and compared to the 2 Des' and carol. Cost effective

If anything shrewdness is called for if the show is to survive the fallout of these resignations and just naming people already on T could be completely wrong for the programme.

Do not forget that this is not chea late night television but is actually cheap daytime television.

IMO, you can say until you are blue in the face how fantastic "Greggles" and Jo Blythe would be on Countdown, but at the end of the day - the audience want someone they are familiar with, they can trust and presenters who can continue the show in the same demeanour it has been associated with. I do not think these two can provide any of this.

It will be odd with Carol, but it survived the loss of Richard and he was a much bigger part of the show, they should at least try to keep it going, if only to keep the Leeds studio's in action.

Perhaps that's ITV's plan. Before it was confirmed the prospect of Carol going due to a salary cut was blamed on Granada rather than C4 (I don't know though whether Granada or C4 technically employed her), so knowing ITV's stupidity they're probably thinking that hey, get Countdown axed and we can win the 3pm slot with some daytime crap - and close a studio down too!

I don't think Greg would be suitable for Countdown. He seems a decent chap, but his style is just not right for it - as demonstrated on the clip on Youtube posted earlier on in the thread. I don't think he'd take it seriously enough. How about Dave Spikey?

Love the idea of Jo Blythe, though.

Hmm - Carol also solved the number challenges... If they replace her - and if they changed the format they could use an entirely graphic based solution - then they have to chose between a Wheel of Fortune-style presenter who just puts letters and numbers on a board, or a Carol style presenter who is good at mental arithmetic and solving those types of puzzles. (It isn't mathematics really...)

Replacing Carol and her role with a computer would take a lot of the fun out of the show - and make it far less human. You also lose some banter potential.

However in the current climate - I suspect Des and Carol are both expensive presenters.

Wonder how the C4/ITV funding works when it comes to presenter fees - whether C4 pick up talent costs separately (I doubt it for Countdown) or whether the talent costs are part of the show budget. If the latter then you can see ITV wanting to increase their profits in making the show for C4 by reducing their talent costs? (Though C4 may alter the budget based on who is presenting?)

Anyone would think Carol Vorderman is the only woman in the country who can add up!

Well, Dave Spikey wouldn't take it seriously enough either given his role on Bullseye!

Another few to add to the presenter pool...
"Goodies" Graeme Garden and Tim Brooke-Taylor (although we all remember how slow that Beat the Nation show was they hosted in Summer 2003!)
