It the show survives she may be required to swot up on the numbers.

Are there any other good celebrity mathematicians out there ? And as cost seems to be a factor, they would have to be relatively cheap ?

Maybe she could put the letters out, but not the main job.

They should launch an X Factor type show to find Carol's replacement.

Or not.

Or revamp CECIL, the computerised random number generator to also work out the answer. Then any random person could do the "hostess" gig without having to know any maths.

Good idea!

As a student, Countdown's essential viewing for me. But now, I think the show's time is up. There's no way it can continue without Carol.

No.

With Carol going it is probably best to rest it, but if it continues they need to search for her replacement in the same way they found her.

I take it Carol will be on the job market then, she doesn't seem to have much of a secondary career any more.

Does she actually present anything else at the moment other than adverts for loans ?

She knows where to go if she needs to borrow a few quid then

They should take the route of the French version and let a Computer decide all the letters and numbers. I don't know why I cannot think of anyone else in Carol's job, thesedays gameshow hostesses seem to be a thing of yesteryear, but as Carol's been doing it for that long, she's blended in.

As long as they keep the doo-doo-do-do-do-DO!

Yes, I agree with this this to be honest.

To be fair the Countdown audience are alot more adaptable to change than we give them credit for. Everyone said Richard Whitely was irreplaceable - until he was replaced. Twice.

Certainly for Carol's role they've got to go down the unknown route - otherwise it's destined for failure.

The Countdown page on the C4 website says replacements for Carol and Des will be announced in due course, so presumably the show will carry on. I can't help but wonder if they have a replacement for Carol in mind.

Perhaps Carol's departure will be a good thing, as it will be a chance to refresh the show slightly.

I think an unknown would be best. Not to sure who should fill Des's shoes - perhaps Richard Digance.
