I can't believe he'd take up the role as host on Countdown before the job as Have I Got News For You's permanent presenter!
He should have been given that gig long ago, but they never asked him. I think that's a real loss as he'd be perfect for HIGNFY. The guest hosts are variable in quality and I tend not to watch some weeks.

I don't remember them ever saying they were going to get a permanent one
No well that's fairly clear with various guest presenters over the last few series. At first it was a bit of a novelty but I think as others have said that it tends to vary in quality now with different presenters.

Anyway, I digress.
I remember seeing an interview with him, and I think that he said that he had been told that he
was
going to be offered the HIGNFY job but then they decided to stick with the guest format.
Though I'm surprised he's took it, and concerned he won't commit beyond a couple of years, I think he is an excellent choice and I'm glad they've gone for someone younger. Whether the over-60s would agree though is questionable.
Armstrong is an ok appointment. I trust they are going to try to reinvent the programme now or will the budget not allow for that ? A new set is certainly required.
Personally I'd prefer if it went back to 30 minutes, it's a case of too many rounds at 45 minutes.
