I have seen an advert recently about cake*. They have 20 seconds to take all the slices behind someones back. They overlaid it with a 20 seconds version of the countdown music but are they allowed to use it? Has anyone else seen this advert?

Well I should think they've cleared it with whoever holds the copyright, rather than just doing it anyway and hoping noone notices.
Yeah they're allowed to do it, not sure if the Countdown music is a library track or not, either way as Mr. Grindon just said they just have to clear the copyright.
I'm not so sure if they would be allowed to advertise within Countdown, the rules used to be that adverts couldn't be shown during a programme if they featured the 'talent' from the same programme don't know if theme tunes were included in that rule.
The advert producers have probably already obtained permission to use it from the copyright holders. Also, TV Networks already pay the royalties to play copyrighted music, so in a sense, anything goes.
On the subject of "is this advert allowed", Dave played out the WHSmith ad about books, voiced by Clarkson as the first ad in a break in Top Gear (after a trailer) which I thought was maybe pushing the rules a bit.

And speaking of pushing the rules, on the Sky adverts for the Sky package advertise certain programmes and events, the current has Prison Break and Are You Smarter Than A 10 Year Old?, yet all be it in small writing the channel, the time and the day that it airs.
I thought that there was a rule against this, or is the rule only against when advertising a certain programme on another channel/network?
