You are thinking of Gordon Banks.
Or an actor. Surely an unknown presenter would be better?
Gordon Burns would be a safe pair of hands.

Or they could hire an unknown actor. I mean it's only Countdown, it doesn't need a 'name'.

Why? The same chosen few are given presenting jobs all the time. It's not some special skill that only they were born with - it can be learned, and any good actor can learn to cheerfully read a teleprompter.

I know! He's already given up the Radio 2 breakfast show and Eurovision, one would have been very close to him, he got paid shed loads for it and one was only once a year and it's something I believe he had a love for. The idea he'd be up to joining Countdown which is for much less money than the Radio 2 breakfast show and a lot more travel is ridiculous.
Wogan is almost certainly a non starter

Dave Spikey for me. He's based in Chorley, so an easy enough drive and probably cheaper than Stelling to sign up.

Greg Scott (GreggybabyUK) is apparently 10/1 with the bookies and 4/1 favourite with Stan James to host, but as said by himself, he's not going to get the gig.

* Stepehn Fry 4/1
* Alexander Armstrong 5/1
* David Mitchell 5/1
No chance any of them. They're all very clever people and would be bored out of their mind doing that job! Plus all of them have multiple irons in the fire already. Terry Wogan is a possible I'd have thought.
There's quite a few presenters who would have been perfect for it had it been 10 years ago - Tom o'Connor would have been great but he's sounding a little frail these days. The same with Bob Holness

I really doubt he'd do it, unless they moved it to London and Wogan's Perfect Recall has been axed and still I think it's a long shot.
Don't forget Alexandra Armstrong almost excepted the gig last time round but decided against becoming a pensioner pin up and of course he's got Pointless now.

Indeed, when it launched it didn't have a 'name' (unless you count Kenneth Williams and Ted Moult).
John Suchet would be good, many ex-newsreaders would be quite good at it: Martin Lewis or Angela Rippon spring to mind or one of the veterans from regional telly like Richard Whitely was - Bob thingy from Central for example
John Suchet is only 67.
