Didn't they change the colour of the letters once too which was equally as unpopular and meant they had to record the bits of the show involving letters again? I might have made that up though.

Series 18 saw the change of letter tiles to a new red and white design. After several episodes had been recorded, someone realised that this would cause problems for epileptics. An attempt was made to record all the shows again with the original contestants and different tiles, but this caused issues as some were no longer available. This resulted in some shows, notably in the series finals, still having to be screened with the problem tiles.

Regarding the clock music, if it only lasted 5 episodes I'm guessing it was technically dropped after a day as I read somewhere that weeks worth of episodes is filmed in one day, or at least used to.

Couldn't they have just re-shot the letters and then edited them into the programme? The contestants and the letters never appear on screen in the studio together

They'd have had to recut/dub all the audio as well - or reshot Carol with a paper bag on her head.

Off work this week so caught yesterdays episode - if anything he's getting worse. Seems to treat the show more like an A-Level exam than the fun parlour game it has always been.

Perhaps the contestants are being affected by the new Countdown host if today's episode was anything to go by, the male contestant certainly cannot be called Mr Laugh a minute, such a solemn man indeed.

Well he was ill.

The male contestant wasn't ill, if you read my post correctly you will find that I was referring to the male contestant and not the host.

What I like about Nick Hewer being the host of Countdown is that not every show feels the same, and you don't know what to expect, unlike former host Jeff Stelling, as much as I found him funny it was like most of what he said each time was very specially scripted.

As long as they didn't talk over each other when the contestants asked for the letters/numbers then it would have been fine. even if they did there's ways round it
