It must stay in Leeds in order to honour Richard Whiteley.

Richard Whiteley will be Countdown more than Lynam could ever hope.

Indeed, Richard's corpse would probably be midly more entertaining.

I think you're forgetting something rather important: Richard Whiteley was bloody awful.

Richard Whitely was Countdown.

That was the appeal.... RW was so naff he was good! In a similar vein to Bullseye / Jim Bowen (don't worry I won't go all Peter Kay on you! Laughing )

What studios are there in Newcastle?

Tyne Tees used to have one of the biggest studios in the country there.

It didn't appeal to me...I just though he was awful - and annoying.

It's not a question of having "respect" or not, he's entitled to say he didn't like Whitely.

At the risk of further ruffling your feathers, I wasn't particularly a fan of the show with Richard either. I used to find some of the banter awkward and stilted. He wasn't really my cup of tea. I'm sorry but that's just how it is.

The game itself holds my interest, so I'm glad it is continuing. It's good to know that more people are tuning in.

I don't agree that a television programme should exist as some kind of monument to a former presenter. People can remember Richard fondly (and I am sure they will), without the show being pickled in preserving fluid.

Didn't Countdown move to Newcastle for a series or two a few years back?

Anyone know why?

Lack of available studios at Leeds - one was permanently used for Granada Breeze and ISTR there was some refurbishment going on to some studios.

IIRC it was the Wellbeing channel that was taking up the studio space. I'm sure Breeze was long gone by that time.

Breeze had a purpose built studio in Manchester, looks like a Garden conservatory, I think ITV Play uses it now. How long did Wellbeing last, I remember it was a disaster joint venture between Granada and Boots, with all output pratically coming from Yorkshire. It was rather similar to Taste CFN which was owned by Carlton and Sainsburys, it was a good idea in theory, it just never took off.

Yes it is. I'm sure such comments will upset some people

You're as brittle and insulting as anyone on this board, Joe, so your hypocracy on this matter is nothing short of outrageous.

And just so it is perfectly clear - I will start and stop at my desire.

I think they could have found a better presenter to replace RW.

Des does have the rapport with Carol (although she has started to get a little too full of herself since Des came on board); he also has the intelligence, 'housewife' appeal and presenting experience. However he misses the quirky personality that would be more suited to the programme.

I think someone like Stephen Fry, Alan Coren, Magnus Magnusson or even Terry Wogan would have done a better job? Confused

Noel Edmonds was second-in-line to getting the job, Countdown just wouldn't have been right for him either. Considering his success with DOND , it's just as well he didn't get the Countdown hotseat!

There was no need for that.
