Also - if you look at this gaysite.nl story you will see the level of prejudice that still exists in the UK. (For those who do not understand Dutch it's about over 300 complaints received over The Bill's gay kiss).

Pathetic isn't it. Sure, here's not the worst in the world with that respect, but then I don't live anywhere else in the world.

It's easy to perhaps think the complainers are the losers in all this -- but actually, they never are. They keep the whole thing going, sadly.

Oh my god! You see, I'm right! In my previous reaction I described my vision about the advertisers who have a certain influence on the content of the programs of commercials TV-channels...

Whataday said that Heineken (the Dutch beerproducer) had his finger in a certain program and wanted less black people to appear in it. Really a shame to see it's a Dutch company which does such things!

Totally irrelevant but why does Coronation Street have:

Hmmmm... It's funny seeing you talking about 'the first gay kiss' in a soapseries. Well, we haven't had one recently in the Netherlands, but I think if someone (I can't imagine WHO!) would announce that two boys in GTST (a Dutch soapseries) are going to kiss each other or maybe have sex on TV, very few people would talk about that in a serious way. As I said: "I can't imagine who", because for the viewers nor for the actors it won't be a very big deal.

As you may probably know, we here in the Netherlands are more 'advanced' when it comes to homosexuality. Though, for the broadcaster (RTL 4) of GTST the decision to 'inject' some gay-affaires, is hard, I think. Not because of the few viewers who will turn their TV on another channel when seeing two boys kissing or whatever lovely things doing together, but just for the reason of the advertisers. The advertisers don't want to be associated with homosexuality because it may damage their image. At least, that's what I think: there hasn't been a gay kiss or whatsoever for a long time in GTST.

How is that in Great Britain? Do TV-channels dance to their advertisers? Do the commercials giants listen to their sponsors to receive more pounds? The multinationals who are vulnarable for bad publicity? Or haven't they any influence in the programs of British commercial broadcasters at all?

(By the way, GTST ('Goede Tijden, Slechte Tijden', in English something like: 'Good Times, Bad Times') is the country's longest broadcasted soapseries: it's on our screen for elevenor maybe twelve years (yes, nothing compared to Coronation Street). And today was the opener for the new season. Terrible, again ten months of crazy storylines, bad playing actors and a commercial break after 5 minutes!

But, as I said, my theory of the power of the advertisers is just a thought... And regarding that gay-kiss in Coronation Street... Enjoy it! Very Happy

The first series of 'Queer as Folk' was sponsored by Beck's lager but they withdrew their sponsorship after the first couple of shows after a nasty article by that tosspot Gary Bushell in the Sun. Becks was boycotted by all on the Gay Scene in London. Other advertisers (I can't remember who now) also withdrew their spots from during the program. All credit to Channel 4 for sticking two fingers up to them (and the Daily Mail.)
