Coronavirus: A change in habits

A simple question (April 2020)

I've noticed that the first thing I do when I wake up is get the latest updates about Covid:19. I suppose that's become the norm in this strange world we're living in.

Have you noticed your viewing habits change? It seems to me that there are three groups

1. Newshounds, those who are constantly glued to Sky, BBC etc for the latest
2. "Sanctuary seekers". Those who will watch anything but the news until say 6PM
3. "Middle of the roaders" Those who split their viewing.

This is a really interesting question, thanks for bringing it up.

I’ve been finding it really difficult to switch off from the news. I’m not used to being at home so much. This in turn is making it difficult to relax.

The last few days I’ve been forcing myself by moving my phone out of sight, and trying to absorb myself in something other than news on tv. Quiz the last few nights has been great for this, as well as Killing Eve. I can flick through Netflix for hours without finding anything to watch, so last night I signed up for Now TV, which seems to have a lot more that interests me.

Right now I’m catching up on work for a few hours in the morning, going out for a walk in the afternoon, watching an hour or two of news before trying to find something non-news later on.

You're very welcome.

With me its newshound-ish. I majored in Journalism at college (forgive me if you've heard that already) so for me getting the latest news is a habit. In the early days of the crisis Sky News and BBC News were rarely off the screen but as the days went on/melted into one another I started frantically trying to watch anything but the news. Right now I'm waiting for Night Force to begin on BBC1. Smooth Northwest has been a godsend as has youtube and my own media library

As somebody who has aspergers and is still struggling to cope with the change in circumstances re lockdown I have to admit that I hang on every word of the daily press conferences.

GMB in the morning, (as my wife said this morning, we really are in strange times) Music radio until 4pm, then the BBC CV update until 6pm. C4 News 7 to 8. Then non CV TV or Netflix viewing until bedtime

Yes, I'm disconnecting as much as possible really whilst trying to keep informed. Inevitably check first thing and periodically during the day on the app, but increasingly putting space between me and my phone and trying my best to avoid the news during the day, opting to watch usually the Evening News or sometimes News at Ten to get a daily update.

Viewing wise not using Netflix as much as I thought I would having bookmarked a few series I'd been intending to watch for months and only completing one so far. I did rewatch the entire first series of Big Brother Canada last week though and will probably start on the second in the next couple of days, but frankly it's really annoying that we're set for the sunniest and dryest April ever it appears so trying not to spend all day watching TV. I think my viewing would be quite different if it had been wet and miserable.

At first it was very much a case of checking the news via apps, websites and TV throughout the day as much as possible, even scheduling my early evening to fit around the press updates.

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve noticed that it’s changed a little. Luckily I’m still working for a few days a week so they ensure that I avoid the temptations for updates. I’m finding that I’m watching more programmes and trying to clear my set top box (a never ending struggle) as much as possible in the evening. Friends, family and I are even scheduling when to start on demand programmes and films so that we can discuss them afterwards, ranging from Tiger King to Cool Runnings.

It’s very important to have balance, I’ve now cut back to a quick browse in the morning and then a bit of news in the evening.

Personally my viewing habits haven't really changed. I'm both a newshound and middle-of-the-road, but on the radio. I still listen to Today and the World Tonight, but I've recently started listening to PM (for the briefing). I still have school work to get on with so I do that during the day. If I'm honest, I don't really watch too much TV or video content. Something I've been doing for the last month or so is jotting down the day's figures during the midnight news on Radio 4 and comparing it with the day preceding, and the same day one week ago. I still end my day with the shipping forecast, so that haven't changed. I think it's safe to say I don't have the same interests and habits as most people my age :p

What I have been telling myself since the lockdown began, however, is that I will be taking a brisk walk outside at least once everyday. This has yet to emerge.

I'll be honest, not too much has changed for me. Just as much of a news junkie as before. LBC News in the morning, with the radio (well, smartspeaker) staying on during the day. Then the BBC News Channel goes on in time for the daily briefing.

The only difference is that with the extra time, I've been looking for other radio stations to listen to when not listening to the news. This has resulted in me developing a soft spot for some of the Bauer stations, notably, Hits Radio, Greatest Hits Radio, and Absolute Radio 00s/10s.

My media habits have changed substantially. I still watch about the same amount of news, from the BBC and Sky, with a morning listen to LBC News, but apart from that, much of rest of my viewing has changed from sport, including Sky Sports News, to catching up on many dramas that I recorded over the past few months, but hadn't got around to viewing. I may well get my Sky+ recordings right down - currently the free space is up to 82% - the main thing that was previously preventing me from going to Sky Q. I have no reason currently to catch up with sport, if anything the continued sports news on BBC Breakfast is to me a waste, but I understand why they do it.

I'm the same. Alexa has been pumping out, Heart, Smooth and Greatest Hits Radio

Is there a website or app that is curating non virus news stories? I'd certainly use it at the moment!
